A CBFC certificate for Vijay’s much-delayed film began racing across social media, triggering instant celebration and fresh release chatter. Then came the whiplash. The document was fake, and the makers had to step in before the frenzy spiralled further.
That clarification has now reset the conversation around one of Tamil cinema’s most watched releases. While the viral certificate has been dismissed outright, Jana Nayagan is still moving through its final censor-stage formalities, with the production house confirming that the film is now awaiting clearance after a fresh list of CBFC-directed changes.
Makers Confirm Viral Certificate Is Fake
KVN Productions has made it clear that no CBFC certificate has been issued for Jana Nayagan yet. The production house also confirmed that the Central Board of Film Certification has completed its review and sent the team a fresh list of final revisions. The certificate will only be issued after those changes are carried out and the revised version is approved.
A post shared by Prakash Vijay also warned fans against trusting the document doing the rounds online. He wrote, “தற்போது சமூக வலைதளங்களில் சுற்றி வரும் ஜனநாயகன் ‘தணிக்கை சான்றிதழ்’ பொய்யான ஒன்று அதை யாரும் நம்ப வேண்டாம் ! #JanaNayagan”
That update has brought some much-needed clarity to a film whose release path has already been unusually turbulent. Even without a certificate in hand yet, the latest movement indicates that Jana Nayagan is inching closer to theatres after months of uncertainty.
Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth and backed by KVN Productions, was originally slated for a Pongal release on January 9, 2026. It stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priya Bhavani Shankar and Yogi Babu, with music composed by G V Prakash Kumar. The political action drama has carried added weight from the start because it is being positioned as Vijay’s final film before his full-time political innings.
The delays began after the film was referred to a revising committee amid objections that some scenes hurt religious sentiments and portrayed the armed forces objectionably. The matter later moved through the Madras High Court and then reached the Supreme Court, turning what should have been a routine release cycle into a prolonged legal and certification battle.
The situation worsened in April when the film leaked online in full during the certification process. Investigators later said nearly 1.2 crore people had watched the pirated version after it was allegedly copied from an editing suite and circulated through Google Drive before spreading further. Despite that major setback, the makers are now targeting a theatrical release in the final week of July or the first week of August 2026.

Vijay’s last three releases, Varisu and Leo in 2023, followed by The Greatest of All Time in 2024, kept his box office momentum intact and reinforced his status as one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars. As of July 2026, it remains his only confirmed upcoming release and is widely seen as the final big-screen chapter before his political transition, making its eventual clearance and release far bigger than a routine censor update.
