Thalapathy Vijay‘s Jana Nayagan has faced a major setback after the Supreme Court rejected the producers’ request for immediate approval from the Central Board of Film Certification. The request was submitted by KVN Productions LLP after the Madras High Court division bench put a hold on a previous single bench ruling that instructed the CBFC to certify the film promptly.
A panel consisting of Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Augustine George Masih chose not to consider the request, highlighting that the case is already set for discussion before the Madras High Court division bench on January 20.
Supreme Court Refuses To Intervene
The Supreme Court remarked that it would refrain from intervening at this point while the matter is still under consideration by the high court. This means the producers will have to wait for the Madras High Court’s ruling before any progress can be made on the certification front.
During the proceedings, senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, representing KVN Productions, contended that it is a well established norm in the industry to announce release dates prior to obtaining CBFC certification. He also noted that more than 5,000 theaters had been reserved for the film’s debut.
Over 5000 Theatres Booked For Release
Despite the legal arguments presented by the producers, the Supreme Court insisted that they must wait for the high court’s ruling. This delivers a temporary setback to the film’s release schedule. The film has generated massive anticipation among fans, with over 5,000 theaters reportedly reserved across the country.
The certification dispute arose after the CBFC raised concerns about certain armed forces related emblems in the film. The matter has been stuck in legal proceedings for several days now.
Vijay’s Final Film Before Politics
Jana Nayagan marks Thalapathy Vijay’s final cinematic outing before he enters politics. Directed by H. Vinoth, the film has been one of the most anticipated releases in Tamil cinema. The actor’s fans have been eagerly waiting to see him on the big screen one last time before his political career begins.
The film has reportedly breached the Rs 50 crore mark in worldwide presales, signaling one of the biggest openings for a Tamil film in recent years.
