Javed Akhtar Furious Over Altered Sholay Dialogue In The Final Cut: Legendary Writer Says You Cannot Tamper With Iconic Lines

Legendary screenwriter Javed Akhtar is absolutely livid after discovering that an iconic dialogue from Sholay has been altered in the upcoming re-release, Sholay – The Final Cut. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on December 12, 2025, featuring the original ending that has never been shown in cinemas during the film’s 50-year existence. However, the changed dialogue has now overshadowed the excitement surrounding this historic re-release.

The veteran writer was shocked and furious when he learned that nobody sought permission from him, his writing partner Salim Khan, or director Ramesh Sippy before making this unauthorized change. This revelation has caused widespread outrage among fans and industry members who consider the dialogues of Sholay to be sacred and untouchable.

The Dialogue That Sparked Outrage

The controversy centers around a famous exchange in the film. In the original version, Basanti, played by Hema Malini, says to Veer,u played by Dharmendra, “Bade nishaanchi lagte ho” (you seem quite a sharpshooter). Jai, played by Amitabh Bachchan, then jokes in response, “Haan, James Bond ke pote hain yeh” (Yeah, he is the grandson of James Bond). This line has been quoted by fans for decades and has become part of popular culture.

However, in the trailer of Sholay – The Final Cut, this dialogue has been changed to “Haan, Tatya Tope ke pote hain yeh” (Yeah, he is the grandson of Tatya Tope). The James Bond reference has been completely replaced with a reference to the Indian freedom fighter. Nobody knows who authorized this change or why it was deemed necessary after all these years.

Javed Akhtar’s Strong Reaction

When informed about the altered dialogue, Javed Akhtar’s reaction was immediate and fierce. “I was not aware of this! You mean to say, they have replaced James Bond with Tatya Tope? What does this mean? And this is just one dialogue. They might have similarly changed other famous lines. The audience won’t accept this,” he stated. His concern extends beyond just this one line. He fears that if one dialogue has been tampered with, other iconic lines might have been altered as well.

The legendary writer also questioned the authority behind this decision. “Have they spoken to the director?” he asked, to which he was informed that Ramesh Sippy was not consulted either. Javed Akhtar made it clear that neither he nor Salim Khan was approached for permission. “We are the writers of those lines that are recited even today by fans of Sholay. In fact, the dialogues of Sholay were so popular that the music company Polydor (now Universal Music) had to release an album of dialogues, which sold more than the songs album. No, you can’t tamper with this,” he declared firmly.
