But how did Atlee manage to create such a sensational film with the superstar? In an exclusive interview with The Indian Express, the director shared his insights on how he approached the project and what he learned from working with Shah Rukh Khan.

Jawan, a right combination of what fans expect and newness

Atlee talked about how he sticks to his “roots and basics” when he writes films with some of the top actors, including Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay.  Atlee confessed that he is a self-proclaimed fan of Shah Rukh Khan and that he always wanted to work with him. He said that he read the actor’s personality and fan base before directing him. He said that he wanted to give the fans what they expected from Shah Rukh Khan, as well as surprise them with something new.

“I just read the actor before I direct them. So I become their fan and that way I read the fans’ pulse also. If you read Jawan as a thesis, apart from being a film lover, you see how whatever the fans expect from Shah Rukh sir is there in Jawan and whatever he’s not seen doing in the last thirty years is also there. So Jawan is the combination of newness and the minimum ‘guarantee’ of the fans’ pulse.”

He also added, “I have been a fan but I’ve always had the right balance when I was in front of the monitor to direct Khan sir and we are seeing the result. I think more than 90% of the people in the world love Shah Rukh sir and the others who are not, we will bring them in the SRK army with Jawan, I think,” he said.

Atlee on exploring the ‘mass layer’ of Shah Rukh Khan

Atlee praised Shah Rukh Khan for being a humble and collaborative person. He said that they had creative discussions while making Jawan but no disagreements and that Shah Rukh Khan as an actor and as a producer trusted him completely. He said that they shared a good rapport and friendship during the four years of making Jawan.

“He is such a wonderful producer, such a wonderful actor, such a wonderful cinema lover so he is always full of surprises. Just when you think that this step no one will take, he’ll take it. Seriously I learnt a lot from him and continue to keep learning from him.” he said.

Atlee also revealed how he explored the ‘mass layer’ of Shah Rukh Khan, which he said is the ability to connect with the masses and make them cheer for him.

Atlee continued, “For instance, Vikram Rathore’s character. He loved Aazad, I love Vikram Rathore in writing, but he trusted me, he gave that one notch extra and that was surprising for me. That has worked with the audience as well. There are moments in the film where the audience has gone like, ‘oh is that him, oh wow! What is this, it is a new aura to us.’ So, the mass layer of Khan sir, I think I explored it in the right vein and that the audience has received this with a lot of love, hooting and cheering.”

Atlee: Taking responsibility for the success of Jawan

Atlee said that he was overwhelmed by the love and response that Jawan received from the audience. However, he also said that he felt a huge responsibility to deliver bigger and better films in the future. He said that he will always make films for the masses and films that take Indian cinema to the world.

“As a creator, what is your happiness? The audience’s love, cheering is your happiness. Every time, with every film I can see it (the love) growing, the family is growing and it keeps me moving (ahead). So, yeah, my next one should be much much bigger than this. I don’t know what I am going to do, but as a responsibility is, the takeaway from Jawan response is that I have to do something bigger than Jawan,” he said.

Atlee confirms ‘Jawan’ sequel to be made

In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, when asked if Atlee is thinking about a ‘Jawan’ sequel given that there’s an open ending in the film. He said, “Every film of mine has such kind of (open) ending, I have never ever thought of doing sequels to any of my films. But I’ve given an open arch to it, so if something strong comes to me, I will make a part two. I have kept an open end and I can come up with a sequel now or later. But definitely will come up with a sequel to Jawan one day.”

According to sources, Atlee has already started his work on the script of the sequel, Jawan 2. Even Shah Rukh Khan had already hinted at a possible sequel to the film. The superstar took to Twitter to thank his fans for their love and appreciation for Jawan and also teased them with a cryptic tweet.

A user asked, “Sir kaali ke saath ‘deal’ kyu nahi kar rahe.. I am a big vijay sethupathi sir fan !” To which actor quipped and replied, “I am a big fan of Vijay sir too… par Kaali ka kaala dhan toh le liya ab dekho doosron ke bhi Swiss banks se lekar aata hoon… Buss visa ka hi wait kar raha hoon. Ha ha!!!”

A Spin-off on Vikram Rathore?

Atlee also said if he had to make a spin-off, he will make it based on the character of Vikram Rathore, who is one of the two roles played by Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan. He said, “Vikram Rathore is my hero, may be I’ll plan a spin off on him” He also added, “I am a daddy’s boy and hence, I love to write strong father characters. You can see it in all my films.”

Vikram Rathore is a former army officer who suffers from memory loss and becomes a vigilante who fights for justice and social causes. He is also the father of Azad Rathore, who is the other role played by Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan. Fans have been gushing over this avatar of Shah Rukh Khan since its release and have been demanding a spin off film based on him.
