About The Film
The Diplomat was released today (March 14) and is currently running in theatres. This film is based on real-life events and showcases the heroic efforts of senior diplomat JP Singh, who helped rescue an Indian woman from Pakistan in 2017. Singh, now India’s ambassador to Israel, played a major role in her safe return when he worked as the deputy high commissioner in Islamabad.
The film tells the story of Uzma Ahmed, an Indian woman who travelled to Pakistan to marry a man she met in Malaysia. But she soon realised he already had four children and forced her into marriage at gunpoint. She faced abuse before finding a way to contact the Indian High Commission for help.
Singh and his team created a plan to bring her home. Indian officials, pretending to be her relatives, helped her enter the High Commission, where she found safety. The Indian authorities took the matter to the Islamabad High Court, which ruled in her favour. Singh then escorted her to the Wagah border and ensured she returned to India.
Singh has had a long and distinguished diplomatic career. He has worked in Kabul, led the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran division at the Ministry of External Affairs, and served as a joint secretary in the External Affairs Minister’s office.
In The Diplomat, Abraham plays a fictionalised version of Singh. The film highlights the risks and challenges Indian diplomats face while protecting citizens abroad.
