The wait for the next chapter of Kalki 2898 AD has moved from fan chatter to production action. After the first film ended on a cliffhanger and opened up a larger cinematic universe, director Nag Ashwin has confirmed that the sequel is ready to roll cameras again from next month.
Nag Ashwin Confirms Kalki 2898 Ad Sequel Shoot Update
Nag Ashwin has shared a clear progress update on the Kalki 2898 AD sequel, confirming that the team is preparing to resume filming in July 2026. The director said, “Kalki 2 has already begun. We are making preparations to continue shooting from next month and complete it at a rapid pace.”
That is the reassurance fans were waiting for. The sequel brings back Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, with the July schedule taking the large scale production into its next active phase. The current production plan places a major filming push before April 2027, followed by a long post production window ahead of its planned December 2027 theatrical release.
The stakes are high because Kalki 2898 AD was designed as a spectacle driven franchise, blending mythology, dystopian science fiction and star power. The sequel continues the conflict teased in the first film, with Supreme Yaskin, played by Kamal Haasan, becoming more central to the story.
Deepika Padukone Will Not Return For The Sequel
One major casting change has already been officially announced. Deepika Padukone, who played SUM 80 in the first film, will not be part of the sequel.
In September 2025, the makers wrote on X, “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, We have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”
The statement confirmed a significant shift for the franchise, which had positioned her character at the emotional centre of the first film’s narrative.

Kalki 2898 AD was written and directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies. The 2024 Telugu epic science fiction film starred Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, Shobana and Disha Patani in key roles.
The film was set in a dystopian future in Kashi, where a group fights to protect SUM 80’s unborn child, believed to be the final incarnation of Vishnu.
Released theatrically on June 27, 2024, Kalki 2898 AD became a blockbuster and crossed the ₹1,000 crore mark worldwide, cementing its sequel as one of Indian cinema’s most watched big scale follow ups.
