Karan Johar Clarifies His Comments On Homebound, Says He’s “Exceptionally Proud” Of The Film

Ever since Homebound’s theatrical run floundered relative to expectations, controversy has surrounded co-producer Karan Johar. Earlier this week, Johar posted an Instagram Story to address how his earlier remarks were being portrayed and to set the record straight.

Karan Johar Breaks Silence on Homebound

In the clarifying message, Johar wrote: “I humbly request my friends and members of the media to not misconstrue or misquote my comments on our film HOMEBOUND. It was an academic chat on the business of our movies. I am and will always be exceptionally proud of HOMEBOUND. It will always shine in our repertoire of films as one of our finest and most sensitively performed and directed films. We are actively working towards making our film get a large audience and presence on a global stage and are thrilled with the day on day increase in domestic footfalls as well.”

With that, he seeks to curb misrepresentations and reaffirm his faith in the film.

From Cannes Ovation to Oscar Selection

Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and produced by Dharma Productions alongside Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra, made headlines with its prestigious festival run. It premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2025 and reportedly received a nine-minute standing ovation. The film was subsequently selected as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

Critical reception was largely positive, with praise for its performances, direction, and themes. But as it entered the domestic market, its performance measured modestly. Industry trackers suggest global box office receipts remain in the low single digits in crores.

Complicating matters was the fact that Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, also backed by Dharma Productions, was released in close proximity, intensifying internal competition for screens. Many fans and critics alike questioned why Homebound, despite its acclaim, was allotted limited shows in several cities. One fan story pointed out that while Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari was running nearly 100 daily shows in certain markets, Homebound was relegated to just three in some places.

Why the Clarification Now?

Karan Johar’s earlier comments had sparked backlash. In interviews, he had suggested that future films would require a greater emphasis on profitability, a stance some interpreted as distancing himself from art-driven projects like Homebound.

Johar’s Instagram note seems intended to temper that reaction. He emphasizes that his remarks were academic, not dismissive. He expresses continued pride in the film’s sensitive storytelling and affirms that efforts are already underway to expand its reach both in India and overseas.

The clarification may also serve to rebuild goodwill with the creative community, audiences, and festival circuits, reminding stakeholders that despite commercial pressures, Johar still views Homebound as a landmark in his cinematic journey.

It remains to be seen whether this message will shift public perception and whether Homebound realigns its trajectory in the days ahead.
