Karan Johar Clarifies Takht Status, Says Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal Starrer Is Not Being Revived Right Now

The long-shadowed fate of Takht finally has a clear answer from Karan Johar himself. Years after the filmmaker announced the lavish period drama with one of Bollywood’s most talked-about ensemble casts, Johar has now said the film is not being revived at the moment, even though he still hopes to direct it someday.

Karan Johar Puts Fresh Takht Revival Buzz To Rest

In his recent interaction, Johar shut down talk of an immediate comeback for Takht and said there is “no revival of Takht right now on the cards.” For a project that has inspired years of curiosity, that single line brought unusual clarity.

He framed the film not as a closed chapter, but as one he still values immensely. Reflecting on the screenplay, Johar said, “I consider it one of the strongest screenplays developed, written by Sumit Roy, full credit to him. I believe it is the best-written piece of work in my career, and I hope to make that film one day.”

When Takht was first announced in 2018, it instantly stood out as one of Dharma Productions’ most ambitious titles. Conceived as a Mughal era drama around a battle for the throne, it assembled a striking cast that included Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor, and Anil Kapoor. Ranveer Singh and Vicky Kaushal were attached to play Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh, giving the project added dramatic weight from the start.

The film was once positioned for a December 2021 release, but that phase passed as production plans shifted in the aftermath of the pandemic. Over time, Takht became one of those high-profile Hindi film projects that lived on through industry memory and constant questions about whether it would ever return.

Why Takht Still Looms Large In Karan Johar’s Directorial Journey

That lingering intrigue is closely tied to where Takht sits in Johar’s career. As a director, his filmography has moved between intimate emotional dramas and glossy ensemble spectacles, but Takht promised a different kind of ambition, a large-scale period narrative mounted with major stars and a historical power struggle at its center.

His description of the screenplay as the best-written work of his career gives the film a significance beyond stalled scheduling. It suggests that Takht remains a deeply personal creative milestone for him, which is why every new comment about the project draws immediate attention.

For now, Johar has offered the clearest position yet: Takht is not being revived in the present, but it still occupies an important place in his long-term vision as a filmmaker. That balance of closure and possibility is precisely what keeps the title alive in Bollywood conversation.
