Karan Johar has never held back when sharing his views on cinema. Recently, he discussed the limitations faced by stars like Shah Rukh Khan in exploring experimental roles. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, he praised Aamir Khan as a transformative figure in Bollywood.
Karan Johar Calls Aamir Khan A ‘Game Changer’
Johar described Aamir as a “real game changer.” He highlighted the significance of Aamir’s film Lagaan, calling it a landmark in Hindi cinema. “Lagaan is one of those films that will go down in Hindi cinema’s history,” Karan stated.
He noted that 2001 was a pivotal year, producing hits like Gadar, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Dil Chahta Hai, along with the critically acclaimed Chandni Bar.
While Gadar was the box office leader, Lagaan earned an Academy Award nomination, showcasing Aamir’s ability to balance commercial success with artistic integrity.
Karan also reflected on Aamir’s diverse filmography, mentioning other impactful films like Taare Zameen Par, Rang De Basanti, and Ghajini. He credited Aamir with changing the landscape of Hindi cinema and reintroducing the culture of remakes with Ghajini.
Filmmaker Says Shah Rukh Khan’s Massive Stardom Comes With High Expectations
Turning to Shah Rukh Khan, Karan acknowledged that SRK has attempted to take on unconventional roles, citing films like Paheli and Asoka. “Shah Rukh comes from the mindset to do different things and to make a difference,” Karan remarked.
He emphasised that SRK initially worked with visionary directors such as Kundan Shah and Mani Kaul, striving to break away from mainstream conventions.
However, Karan noted that SRK’s massive star power now comes with high expectations. “When you say Shah Rukh Khan, the name comes with an expectation,” he explained.
He expressed a desire to see SRK take on more varied characters, stating, “He might play a mellow character in the future, I hope he does.” But he lamented that such expectations can restrict the kinds of films being made, especially for someone with SRK’s background in theatre.
Karan and Shah Rukh have a long-standing collaboration that began with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, marking SRK’s rise in mainstream cinema. Their partnership continued with hits like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.
SRK even made a cameo in Karan’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which proved their strong friendship and professional bond.
