Karan Johar Gets Emotional: Filmmaker Calls Shelving His Star-Studded Dream Project Takht “Very Heartbreaking”

Karan Johar, the man behind some of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters, showed a rare, emotional side at a recent press meet in Mumbai. While attending the event for the upcoming film Mirai, a question about historical films led him to open up about his own shelved dream project, the mega-multi-starrer Takht.

For years, fans have been waiting for updates on what was supposed to be KJo’s most ambitious film ever. In a moment of candid honesty, the director shared the pain and disappointment he felt when he had to put a stop to the film, leaving fans and the industry heartbroken.

“It Was Just Very Heartbreaking”

When asked if he’d ever make a historical epic, Karan Johar’s response was filled with emotion. He revealed, “I was on the onset of making a feature film which was a period historical. Due to various circumstances, including the pandemic, there was a stop on that film.” He shared that he had poured two and a half years into researching the project, making the decision to halt it even more painful. “It was just very heartbreaking when I couldn’t make it at that time,” he admitted.

To understand the scale of this heartbreak, one just has to look at the star cast. Takht was set to bring together a galaxy of stars, including Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, and Anil Kapoor. It was truly a once-in-a-generation ensemble that audiences were dying to see.

Praising Others With Humility

Despite his own credentials, Karan Johar showed incredible humility while talking about the genre. He praised the passion of filmmakers like Mirai‘s director, Karthik Gattamneni, and the makers of epics like Baahubali. “I feel that I am a student more than a filmmaker… I feel I don’t know if I am capable of it,” he confessed, adding that it’s always better to know your weaknesses.

While the future of Takht is uncertain, KJo left a small glimmer of hope. He said that every film has its own destiny and time. For now, fans can only hope that one day, the time will be right for this epic story to finally be told.
