In a surprising turn of events, actor Kartik Aaryan was spotted visiting filmmaker Karan Johar last night. The two had reportedly parted ways on a bitter note after Aaryan was dropped from Johar’s ambitious project Dostana 2 in 2021. However, their recent appearance has raised hopes of a possible reconciliation and collaboration between the two.

Dostana 2, a sequel to the 2008 hit comedy Dostana, was announced in 2019 with Kartik Aaryan, Janhvi Kapoor and Lakshya in the lead roles. The film was being directed by Collin D’Cunha and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

However, in April 2021, Dharma Productions issued a statement saying that they would be recasting the film due to “professional circumstances”. Although the statement did not mention Aaryan’s name, it was widely reported that he was the one who was ousted from the film.
“Due to professional circumstances, on which we have decided to maintain a dignified silence – we will be recasting Dostana 2, directed by Collin D’Cunha. Please wait for the official announcement soon,” read the statement by Dharma Productions.
According to various media reports, Aaryan and Johar had a fallout over creative differences, date issues and unprofessional behaviour. Some reports also claimed that Johar had banned Aaryan from working with Dharma Productions in the future. Aaryan, on the other hand, maintained a dignified silence on the matter and said that he only focused on his work.
Addressing the topic during an episode of Aap Ki Adalat, Kartik said: “I have not spoken about this yet. I believe, and it’s my etiquette, that whenever there is a rift between an elder person and a younger person, the younger one is not supposed to say anything.”

The rumored feud between the two seemed to have cooled down when Johar attended the premiere of Aaryan’s latest release Satyaprem Ki Katha, a romantic comedy co-starring Kiara Advani. The film, which released in June, 2023, received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike and became a box office success.
Later, in September 2023, Aaryan and Johar were seen together at a panel discussion during the 14th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. The two shared the stage with other prominent personalities from the Indian film industry and discussed various topics related to cinema.
During the Melbourne Film Festival, Karan had showered praise on the actor and said: “Kartik’s films have deeply resonated with the country and have always brought in so much fervour back to the cinema halls. More power to him. May his contribution to cinema always continue.”
