Suriya has found the big-screen roar he needed. After a run of films that kept his stardom alive but did not always translate into dominant theatrical numbers, Karuppu has powered through its first week with the kind of hold that signals genuine audience acceptance. The film has emerged as a major commercial rebound for the actor.
Karuppu Holds Strong After A Massive Weekend
Karuppu added around Rs 9 crore gross on Thursday, taking its seven-day India total to approximately Rs 129.50 crore gross. The film opened at Rs 19 crore on Friday, jumped to Rs 27.25 crore on Saturday and peaked at Rs 31.75 crore on Sunday. Its weekday run remained steady with Rs 16.50 crore on Monday, Rs 14.25 crore on Tuesday, Rs 11.75 crore on Wednesday and Rs 9 crore on Thursday.
The Thursday dip came after the arrival of Drishyam 3, but the overall trend remains strong for a South Indian biggie coming off a huge weekend. Tamil Nadu has been the film’s strongest territory, contributing around Rs 82 crore in the first week. The state alone delivered approximately Rs 6.50 crore on Thursday, placing Karuppu among the best non-holiday Thursday performers in Tamil Nadu.
The territorial split also underlines the film’s wide pull. Apart from Tamil Nadu, Karuppu has collected about Rs 20.25 crore from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Rs 14.50 crore from Karnataka, Rs 10.75 crore from Kerala and Rs 2 crore from the rest of India.
What Makes Karuppu A Big Win For Suriya
Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu is a Tamil fantasy action drama produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. The film stars Suriya, Trisha Krishnan and RJ Balaji, with Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada and Supreeth Reddy in key roles. The story follows a guardian deity who takes on a human disguise to fight corruption within a legal system tied to the fate of a young girl awaiting a liver transplant.
The film’s performance matters because it has restored momentum to Suriya’s theatrical image at a crucial point. For a star whose popularity has remained intact across languages and formats, Karuppu brings the conversation back to sustained footfalls, regional dominance and a crowd-driven response.
Suriya’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Suriya’s recent phase has been closely watched. He appeared as Rolex in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram in 2022, a cameo that became a major talking point. He later had a guest appearance in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect in 2022 and a mid-credits cameo in the Hindi film Sarfira in 2024. His large-scale film Kanguva released in 2024, followed by Retro in 2025.
After the success of Karuppu in 2026, Suriya is attached to Vishwanath and Sons, directed by Venky Atluri and featuring Mamitha Baiju, Radhika Sarathkumar and Raveena Tandon. The film is among his confirmed upcoming theatrical projects.
