Producer Boney Kapoor grabbed attention with some big reveals about his upcoming projects recently at IIFA. He shared that he is considering his daughter Khushi Kapoor for Mom 2 (a sequel to Sridevi’s 2017 film Mom).
Even as he prepares for the production of the much-awaited No Entry 2, Boney Kapoor has set his sights on another sequel. As per reports in PeepingMoon.com, Bollywood producer is expanding the legacy of Mom, the critically acclaimed 2017 thriller that marked the final on-screen appearance of his late wife and veteran actress Sridevi.
Boney shared, “I have watched all of Khushi’s films – The Archies, Loveyapa, and Nadaaniyan. I am planning a film with her too after No Entry. It could be Mom 2. She is trying to follow in the footsteps of her mother. Her mother was the top star in all the languages she worked in. I hope Khushi and Janhvi succeed in achieving the same level of perfection.”
Released in 2017, Mom was Sridevi’s final film. Directed by Ravi Udyawar, the thriller earned her a posthumous National Award for Best Actress. If Mom 2 becomes a reality, it will be a huge milestone in Khushi’s career.
Mom 2 will star Khushi Kapoor — Sridevi and Boney’s younger daughter and Janhvi Kapoor’s sister — in the lead role. The sequel has nothing to do with the 2017 National Award-winning original and is being titled Mom 2 only to leverage the established franchise to attract audiences’ interest. The only similarity between them lies in their shared genre and thematic focus. Like the original, Mom 2 will also center on a vigilante seeking justice. Pre-production is underway and shooting will commence next month.
Girish Kohli, who co-wrote Mom and has writing credits on Kesari and HIT: The First Case, will direct Mom 2. This marks his second directorial following his recent debut with Sohum Shah’s critically acclaimed Crazxy. This film will also be Khushi’s first character-driven lead role, following lukewarm responses to her performances in The Archies, Loveyappa, and Naadaniyaan. The makers are aiming to bring together a strong lineup of established and emerging actors for other pivotal and supporting roles.
Released in July 2017 — just seven months before she passed away – Mom earned widespread acclaim for Sridevi’s powerhouse performance as a vigilante who sets out to avenge her stepdaughter after she’s sexually assaulted at a party. The Ravi Udyawar-directed thriller featured standout performances from Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna, alongside Sridevi. The film went on to win two National Awards: one for Sridevi as Best Actress and another for A.R. Rahman’s exceptional background score.
