King Director Sujoy Ghosh, who worked with Vidya Balan in Kahaani, has opened up about his long-standing partnership with the actress.
In a recent conversation with casting director Mukesh Chhabra on Mashable India, Ghosh remembered the challenges they faced during the making of Kahaani, which was produced on a tight budget in 2012.
Ghosh shared a humorous yet touching incident about how Vidya had to change clothes in an Innova during filming because there was no money for a vanity van.
Sujoy Ghosh Praises Vidya Balan’s Dedication & Commitment
He described her as “very dedicated” and praised her strong commitment to the project.
The director recalled the moment he first met Vidya. He said, “I saw Vidya when she was at Sanjay Gupta’s office to hear a narration from Meghna Gulzar. I gave her Rs 1 that day and told her we’d make a movie together. She saved me; she was Kahaani.”
Despite the flop of Ghosh’s previous film Aladin, which starred industry giants like Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt, Vidya chose to stick with him. He expressed his gratitude, saying she could have easily walked away after the failure, but she remained loyal to her word.
He added, “She could’ve easily said no after Aladin, but she stuck to it. You have no idea; we had no budget. So, we had no vanity van. We used to cover an Innova with black cloth and she would change inside. She’s so dedicated.”
King Director Calls Vidya Balan ‘Zubaan Ki Pakki’ Like SRK & Big B
Sujoy went on to compare Vidya’s reliability to that of legends Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, calling her “zubaan ki pakki,” which translates to someone who is true to their word. This kind of trust and loyalty is rare in the industry and speaks volumes about their professional relationship.
Kaahaani not only set Vidya’s status as a leading actress but also became a significant entry in Indian cinema, winning three National Awards for Best Screenplay (Original), Best Editing, and a Special Jury Award for Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
Sujoy Ghosh & Vidya Balan’s Work Front
Sujoy Ghosh continues to expand his portfolio. After directing segments for Netflix’s anthology series Lust Stories 2, he is now preparing for his next project, King, which will feature Shah Rukh Khan and Suhana Khan.
Meanwhile, Vidya Balan was last seen in Do Aur Do Pyaar alongside Pratik Gandhi, Ileana D’Cruz, and Sendhil Ramamurthy. She is set to star in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, sharing the screen with Kartik Aaryan and Triptii Dimri.
