Kumar Taurani has finally said out loud what Bollywood had only been reading between the lines. After months of legal friction with Vashu Bhagnani over song rights, the producer spoke with unusual bluntness, confirming that a decades-old bond has been badly shaken. His most striking admission was not just about contracts or courtroom strategy, but the personal rupture behind the dispute: “No. Abhi thodi doori hai. What to do? If he had a grievance, he could have come and spoken to us.”
Kumar Taurani Questions Bihar Filing In Song Rights Row
The legal fight began in May 2026, when Vashu Bhagnani filed a case in Katihar, Bihar, over the alleged unauthorized use of songs linked to Biwi No 1 in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The recreated versions of “Chunari Chunari” and “Ishq Sona Hai” became the centre of the clash, with Tips maintaining that it holds the rights to use the songs.
Kumar Taurani firmly rejected the argument that original producers should continue to control recreated versions after selling the rights. He said, “Aapne paise leke mujhe maal de diya. Toh ab kiska maal hua? Suppose I buy an M F Husain painting for Rs. 1 crore. Tomorrow, I have the freedom to sell it off for Rs. 2 crores or even give it for hire. That is, someone can display the painting at their venue and I can charge Rs. 25 lakhs a month for the same. I paid the full amount to buy the rights and signed the contract. Then, why the objection?”
He also raised questions about the venue of the case and pointed to relief secured by his side in higher courts. Kumar said, “He gave a lot of interviews while we maintained silence. Firstly, these contracts were signed 20-25 years ago. All these years, he never raised any objections. Secondly, all our contracts clearly state that in the event of any legal dispute, Mumbai will be the jurisdiction. Yet, he filed the case in faraway Bihar, that too in a court located 200-300 kms from Patna. Wahaan jaane ki kya zaroorat hai aapko? Thankfully, by God’s grace, we got relief from the High Court and Supreme Court. Now, everybody has told him to go and fight the case in Mumbai if he has any grievance.”
‘Abhi Thodi Doori Hai’ After Decades Of Friendship
What makes the standoff more dramatic is the history behind it. Kumar recalled how closely the two sides once worked together and said, “We shared such a long-standing relationship with Vashu. We were the ones who brought him into the industry, and we made our first films together. Later, when he expressed his desire to produce films independently, we were more than happy to support him. We told him, ‘Akele banao, aage badho’.”
He also revealed that this was not always a point of conflict. Referring to Coolie No 1, released directly on Amazon Prime Video in 2020, Kumar said Bhagnani had approached Tips for the use of two songs from the original film, and a deal was worked out. That memory now gives the present clash an even sharper edge.
Why Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Is At The Centre Of This Row
That is exactly why Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has become more than just another 2026 Hindi film announcement. Directed by David Dhawan and starring Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, and Mrunal Thakur, the film now sits at the centre of one of the industry’s most closely watched rights battles.
With the recreated tracks triggering both legal action and a public fallout between old associates, interest around the project has expanded beyond its cast and commercial appeal. It is now tied to a larger debate over ownership, remixes, and how past agreements are being interpreted in the present day. Film released earlier this summer to moderate success at box office.
