Crime stories often captivate with their audacity and elaborate schemes. Malayalam director Srinath Rajendran, known for his gripping film Kurup (2021), is set to delve into another intriguing criminal narrative as he makes his Bollywood debut.
Srinath Rajendran Set To Make Hindi Debut With A Film On Conman Dhani Ram Mittal
His upcoming Hindi film will centre on the life of Dhani Ram Mittal, one of India’s most infamous conmen.
Mittal’s criminal career spanned over five decades, from 1969 until his death in April 2024. His exploits were as diverse as they were daring. A science graduate from Rohtak, Mittal initially pursued a law degree in Rajasthan before working as a clerk for various advocates. However, his path took a sharp turn into the world of crime in 1969, starting with car thefts from a court’s parking lot.
Mittal’s most audacious scheme involved impersonating a judge. In a bold move, he forged a leave order for a judge at the Jhajjar court in Haryana and took his place.
For several days, Mittal operated as the judge, granting bail to numerous criminals and turning the justice system upside down. His scheme only came to light when he shifted to a new con—becoming a clerk in the Haryana transport department, where he forged driving licences.
Mittal’s life story is packed with elements that promise to make for an engrossing film. The biographical crime thriller will be based on MoneyRam, a book by Preeti Aggarwal and Chetan Unnial. While the screenplay is still in development, Rajendran has announced that the film is set to go into production in early 2025.
Here’s What Ranjendran Said
Rajendran expressed his enthusiasm for the project, The filmmaker told Mid-day, “Cinema today transcends languages. I’m thrilled to embark on this new journey in Hindi cinema. Dhani Ram Mittal is arguably the most fascinating conman in modern Indian history.”
The film’s cast is yet to be finalised, but anticipation is already building. Rajendran’s venture into Bollywood with this high-stakes story promises a thrilling cinematic experience.
