Lagaan Returns To Cinemas On June 12 As Aamir Khan Classic Celebrates 25 Years

Some films age into nostalgia, and then there is Lagaan, the rare Hindi cinema milestone that still feels like a collective memory. As the Aamir Khan starrer prepares to complete 25 years since its original release, Aamir Khan Productions has announced a special theatrical re-release of the film on June 12, 13 and 14, bringing Bhuvan, Champaner and that unforgettable cricket match back to the big screen.

The timing could not be more symbolic. Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India first arrived in cinemas on June 15, 2001, and the new three-day run lands just ahead of its silver jubilee date. A newly launched trailer has also been released with the announcement, revisiting the film’s most loved moments, from the drought-hit village’s impossible challenge to the soaring emotional beats that made it a modern classic.

Lagaan Re-Release Confirmed For June 12, 13 And 14

The special re-release gives audiences another chance to watch Lagaan in theatres, where its scale, music and slow-burn tension were originally designed to unfold. The newly unveiled trailer takes viewers back to Champaner and highlights the themes that helped the film travel far beyond its time, including unity, resilience, hope and resistance.

The film’s music remains a major part of its legacy. Composed by A. R. Rahman, the soundtrack featured songs such as Ghanan Ghanan, Mitwa, Radha Kaise Na Jale and O Rey Chhori, all of which continue to enjoy lasting recall among Hindi film audiences. For fans who watched the film during its 2001 release, the theatrical return is a nostalgia event. For younger viewers, it is an opportunity to discover its sweep on the big screen.

Why Lagaan Remains A Landmark

Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan under Aamir Khan Productions, Lagaan is a Hindi-language period sports drama set in 1893 during British colonial rule. The film starred Aamir Khan as Bhuvan, with Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raghubir Yadav and Rajesh Vivek playing key roles.

The premise follows the people of a drought-stricken village who are crushed under heavy taxation. Their fate changes when a British officer challenges them to a game of cricket, with freedom from tax at stake. The villagers, unfamiliar with the sport, must learn the game and turn the match into a fight for dignity and survival.

At the box office, Lagaan emerged as a hit, collecting around ₹34.30 crore India nett and about ₹65.97 crore worldwide. Its cultural afterlife proved even bigger. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and also won major honours at the National Film Awards, including Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

With its re-release now dated, Lagaan returns not just as a celebrated film, but as a reminder of a moment when mainstream Hindi cinema fused history, sport, music and emotion with rare conviction.
