Rancho, Farhan and Raju may finally be moving closer to a big-screen reunion. More than 16 years after 3 Idiots became one of Hindi cinema’s most loved modern classics, Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani are actively discussing a sequel that would return to the world of the 2009 blockbuster with a direct emotional bridge to its ending.
Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani have already held six meetings on 3 Idiots 2. The two are now expected to have a final sitting, where the creative direction of the sequel will be locked before the project moves into its next stage.
Final Sitting Planned For 3 Idiots 2
The biggest creative detail on the table is the sequel’s timeline. 3 Idiots 2 is being planned as a continuation that begins from where the first movie ended, while moving the story ahead after a 10-year gap.
That gives the film a clean narrative springboard. The original ended with Rancho’s identity as Phunsukh Wangdu being revealed in Ladakh, as Farhan and Raju reunited with the friend who had transformed their lives. The sequel is being developed around what came after that reunion and where the characters stand a decade later.
The makers are approaching the idea carefully, given the enduring popularity of 3 Idiots. The discussions so far have centred on finding a story that justifies revisiting Rancho, Farhan and Raju, rather than building a sequel only on nostalgia.
Why 3 Idiots Remains A Landmark Film
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 3 Idiots released in 2009. The comedy drama starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani.
The film followed three engineering students whose friendship challenged the pressure, fear and conformity within the education system. Its mix of humour, emotion and social commentary made it a blockbuster, with its worldwide lifetime gross recorded at around Rs 460 crore.
At present, 3 Idiots 2 remains in the discussion stage. The full cast, production timeline and release window have not been officially announced.
Aamir Khan’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Aamir Khan’s last major acting release was Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022, directed by Advait Chandan and co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan. His production banner later backed Laapataa Ladies in 2024, which was directed by Kiran Rao.
In 2025, Aamir Khan Productions had Sitaare Zameen Par. In 2026, the banner was associated with Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos and Ek Din, the latter starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi and released on May 1, 2026. Aamir Khan Productions also has Lahore 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and starring Sunny Deol, among its confirmed 2026 titles.
With 3 Idiots 2 now heading towards a decisive creative sitting, Aamir’s possible return as Rancho carries both nostalgia and major audience expectation.
