Madhubala Biopic Hits Pause: Budget Reshuffle Delays Jasmeet K Reen’s Ambitious Tribute To The Screen Icon

The Madhubala biopic, helmed by Jasmeet K Reen and backed by Sony Pictures, Brewing Thoughts, and Madhubala Pictures, has hit a temporary halt. The team is reworking the film’s R100 crore budget to ensure commercial feasibility.

Excessive Tribute Takes A Commercial Reality Check

The highly anticipated biopic of ageless Bollywood diva Madhubala has hit the pause button—not because of artistic differences, but to carry out a budgeting reset. Although the project, directed by Jasmeet K Reen (Darlings), was ready to go, producers Sony Pictures, Brewing Thoughts and Madhubala Pictures decided to step back to recalibrate the financials.

Initially envisioned as an opulent period piece set at a budget of ₹80–100 crore to represent the extravagant world of historical Bollywood royalty Madhubala, the producers were re-evaluating the commercial workability of the math. As a source close to the development explained, it just didn’t add up:

“The period detailing, extravagant costumes and colossal sets were now getting the project out of the realm of recoupment. Now the team is continuing to look for a compromise of a ‘middle path’ that still retains the essence of the elegance of the aesthetic for the piece while not jeopardizing the commercial recovery.”

Jasmeet K Reen Still Excited About The Project

Bringing in Jasmeet K Reen was seen as a significant pivot point for the project. Her storytelling sensibility and proven skill to deliver strong narratives led by women made her the ideal choice to helm this biographical homage.

“The script is full of heart and detail, it’s a love letter to an icon. However, no one wants to burn money in a high-risk market, so the budget has been chopped almost in half to keep it in a sustainable place,” revealed the insider.

While casting discussions had reportedly begun—with a number of top female stars in contention to play Madhubala—those discussions are on hold until the new budget is finalised.

What’s Next for the Project?

Despite the financial setback, the team remains dedicated to the film. The revised plan will retain the essence of the story while reducing financial exposure.

“We hope to get the project back in motion and onto floors by the second quarter of this year,” continued the insider.

Until then, fans of classic Bollywood and Madhubala’s legacy will have to wait just a little longer to see her magic revived on the big screen.

The current delay in production only highlights that everyone involved is committed to getting this tribute right in both a personal and commercial sense. With Jasmeet K Reen at the helm and a new budget just around the corner, this tribute is still likely to be one of Bollywood’s most valued cinematic presentations. Let’s just say an icon like Madhubala deserves nothing less than perfection.
