The Gujarat High Court has lifted the temporary ban on the release of Maharaj, marking the debut film of Junaid Khan, son of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan.
Currently available on Netflix, the court concluded that the movie, revolving around the historical 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, does not intend to offend any community.
Court Says Junaid Khan’s Maharaj Doesn’t Hurt Sentiments
Initially halted by Justice Sangeeta K Vishen on June 13, the court reversed its decision after reviewing the film, which stars Junaid Khan alongside Jaideep Ahlawat and Sharvari Wagh in prominent roles.
“This court prima facie finds that Maharaj is based on events leading to the libel case and does not aim to hurt the sentiments of the Pushtimargi community. The film received certification from the Central Board for Film Certification, ensuring adherence to relevant guidelines. The interim relief granted on June 13 has been lifted,” stated the court.
Originally slated for release on June 14, Maharaj faced a legal pause when the High Court restrained Netflix from streaming it. This followed concerns raised by a group of businessmen who feared the film might provoke religious sensitivities within the Vaishnav community.
The petition, filed on behalf of devotees of Lord Krishna and followers of Vallabhacharya from the Pushtimarg sect, argued that the portrayal of events in the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case could disrupt public order and incite violence.
Apart from Junaid Khan, the film also features Jaideep Ahlawat and Shalini Pandey, with Sharvari Wagh making a guest appearance. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under YRF Entertainment, Maharaj offers a cinematic exploration of historical events with a contemporary narrative twist.
