Telugu cinema superstar Mahesh Babu is shocked to be caught in the middle of an ongoing financial issue. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned the actor in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to dubious overseas investments in the Telugu film industry.

Though Babu is no more than a hateful witness, the mere news has spread like wildfire on the South Indian entertainment headlines and provoked intense online chatter.

What Is the Case About?

As per sources, the ED is dealing with a case where funds are said to be remitted from abroad in dubious ways into Tollywood’s projects. Many production firms and some individuals are said to be part of this web of a multi-crore hawala-type investigation.

Babu, it was suspected, got caught in a web of deals with an international film finance company paying him for consultation services. While he is not an accused, the prosecution claims he needs to be summoned to face questions on the payment and contract details of the deals that were made regarding certain constructions.

According to their information, the agency tracked the routes of the money that was being put through many layers of middle companies into investment companies whose ownership or control had to be hidden into shell companies and many levels of ownership before the funds reached the films: Telugu film projects in the country. All these dealings, it was believed, are in violation of the FEMA Act and PMLA Act.

Mahesh Babu’s Legal Team Reacts

As per early reports, Mahesh Babu is said to be fully cooperating with the ED’s inquiry. A source close to the actor clarified:

“Mahesh Babu has not engaged in any wrongdoing. He has been called in to provide information and clarity on a specific financial transaction. He will be extending full support to the investigation.”

Despite the legal summons, Mahesh Babu’s fans have come out strongly in his support, flooding X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram with messages like:
