With barely days left for release, Main Vaapas Aaunga finds itself in a tricky spot. On paper, the film has the ingredients of a big emotional Bollywood play, Imtiaz Ali returning to romance, Diljit Dosanjh leading the cast, A. R. Rahman on music, and a story designed for the big screen. Yet the theatrical chatter has stayed cautious, not explosive.
The pressure is sharper because this is not just another release weekend. Main Vaapas Aaunga arrives in cinemas alongside Kangana Ranaut’s Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, Manoj Bajpayee’s Governor: The Silent Saviour, and Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past. Reacting to the crowded date, Imtiaz Ali said, “We announced first. But if that is going to be the case, then so be it.”
Main Vaapas Aaunga Faces A Crucial Box Office Test
The concern around Main Vaapas Aaunga is tied to recent box office memory. Imtiaz Ali’s last theatrical directorial, Love Aaj Kal in 2020, failed commercially after opening curiosity. His 2024 musical drama Amar Singh Chamkila earned strong critical appreciation, but it was an OTT release on Netflix and did not deliver a theatrical comeback.
Vedang Raina also enters this film at a sensitive point in his young career. His big screen debut came with Jigra in 2024 opposite Alia Bhatt. The film emerged as a box office bomb, making Main Vaapas Aaunga an important opportunity for him to reset perception in theatres.
Early internal reactions, however, have leaned positive. After watching the film, Ektaa Kapoor wrote, “This movie is called Main Vaapas Aaunga, a love story set against the backdrop of the Partition. A film that beautifully shows how generations may think differently, live differently, and love differently… yet somehow it all leads back to the same thing: you have to fall in love. It’s emotional, timeless, and stays with you long after it ends.”
What Main Vaapas Aaunga Is About
Directed by Imtiaz Ali and backed by Applause Entertainment and Window Seat Films, Main Vaapas Aaunga is a romantic period drama featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina, Sharvari and Naseeruddin Shah. Its positioning leans on music, longing and intergenerational emotion, the kind of terrain Ali has often owned when audiences buy into his world.
For the film, the task is simple and difficult at once. It must convert mood, melody and nostalgia into opening weekend footfalls despite a crowded release slate.
Vedang Raina’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Vedang Raina made his acting debut with Zoya Akhtar’s Netflix musical The Archies in 2023, where he played Reggie Mantle. He then moved to cinemas with Vasan Bala’s Jigra in 2024, led by Alia Bhatt.
His next confirmed theatrical release is Main Vaapas Aaunga in 2026. For Vedang, the film carries more than visibility. It is his first major chance to build stronger theatrical credibility and connect with a wider cinema audience after a flop start on the big screen.
