Main Vaapas Aaunga Surges On Second Saturday As Pvr Inox, Cinepolis Add Early Morning And 2 Am Shows

What began as a modest box office run has quickly turned into one of the weekend’s most closely watched theatrical stories. Main Vaapas Aaunga has picked up sharply in its second week, and exhibitors are now responding with the kind of programming push usually reserved for films showing strong word-of-mouth traction.

The Imtiaz Ali directorial had a slow start, but its weekday hold signalled that the film was finding an audience. On its second Friday, Main Vaapas Aaunga earned Rs. 2 crores, higher than its first Friday collection of Rs. 1.28 crore. By its ninth day, the response had strengthened enough for theatres to start expanding shows across several markets.

Exhibitors Ramp Up Shows As Demand Builds

The most striking development is the addition of unconventional show timings. PVR C&B Square in Mumbai scheduled a 2:00 am show for Sunday, June 21, while PVR Nexus in Bengaluru lined up a 6:50 am screening that was already filling fast. Trade sources also indicated that more cinemas were adding early morning and post-midnight shows as audience demand kept rising.

Gautam Dutta, CEO, Revenue & Operations, PVR INOX Limited, said, “What we’re tracking closely with Main Vaapas Aaunga is the shape of its trajectory, not just the topline box office number. The film has grown steadily through the week, which is exactly the kind of trend exhibitors like to see, as it reflects genuine and sustained audience interest rather than a front-loaded opening. That’s a rare and encouraging sign, indicating that the film’s momentum is being driven by strong word-of-mouth around Imtiaz Ali’s storytelling, Naseeruddin Shah’s powerful performance, and A R Rahman’s memorable score, rather than promotional hype. Even with fresh competition entering cinemas this week, the film is outperforming its first-week levels, demonstrating remarkable staying power. For a niche, content-driven Partition drama, this kind of sustained audience pull is the hallmark of a slow-burn success. We remain optimistic about its performance through the second weekend and beyond.”

Ritesh Arora, Programming Head MovieMax, revealed, “While the film had a slow start last week, it witnessed an impressive turnaround during the weekdays with steadily improving collections. The momentum has continued into the weekend, with shows going houseful and additional screenings being added to cater to the increasing audience demand.”

Devang Sampat, Managing Director, Cinepolis stated, “Cinépolis India, operating 497 screens across the country, has increased shows by 30% from Friday to Saturday owing to soaring demand and rapidly improving occupancies nationwide.”

In West Bengal, the jump has been especially dramatic. Satadeep Saha, Distributor of the film in West Bengal shared, “On Friday, it had 24 shows. Now, it’s playing in more than 50 shows and for Sunday it will be more that 75 shows. It clearly shows the demand the film has generated.”

Why The Film’s Partition-Era Story Is Striking A Chord

That rising audience interest also points to what viewers appear to be connecting with in the film itself. Released in theatres on June 12, 2026, Main Vaapas Aaunga brings together Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari in a romantic drama set against the trauma and memory of the Partition. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, written by Ali and Nayanika Mahtani, and backed by Applause Entertainment, Birla Studios, and Window Seat Films, the film uses a cross-generational emotional canvas to explore love, separation, and the lingering ache of return. With A. R. Rahman’s music adding to that emotional sweep, the film’s late surge suggests that its intimate storytelling is now finding the wider theatrical audience it was chasing.
