Imtiaz Ali is back with Main Vaapas Aaunga, but the film’s freshly unveiled trailer feels less like a bold new chapter and more like a return to his most familiar emotional tropes. Starring Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari and Vedang Raina, the film reaches for aching romance, memory and separation against the backdrop of Partition, yet the first look leans so heavily on old Imtiaz Ali signatures that it lands as old wine in a very old bottle.
Film has hangover of Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal – two timelines, chirpy girl next door and background of Punjab. Film will find it tough at box office like recent Imtiaz Ali releases i.e. Love Aaj Kal 2 and Jab Harry Met Sejal.
Trailer Pivots Between Punjab And Two Timelines
The 3-minute 9-second trailer opens on an elderly man who is still carrying the pain of losing his childhood love during the 1947 Partition of India. His longing becomes the emotional anchor of the film, setting up a story built on grief, memory and the desire to return to what history violently took away.
The narrative then moves to pre-Partition Punjab, where Vedang Raina’s young character falls for Sharvari’s spirited heroine. Their romance is interrupted by the brutality of Partition, which separates them and leaves a wound that never really heals. Decades later, Naseeruddin Shah plays the older version of Vedang’s character, still burdened by that unfinished love story.
Diljit Dosanjh enters the present-day thread as the elderly man’s grandson, a figure who promises to help his grandfather find closure and reconnect with his roots. On paper, the intergenerational angle gives the drama emotional depth. In execution, the trailer appears to revisit the same broken-lover archetypes, poetic yearning and timeline shifts that have defined Imtiaz Ali’s cinema for years. The mood is stirring, but the storytelling beats feel repetitive.
Main Vaapas Aaunga Release Date And Film Details
Main Vaapas Aaunga features Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah in lead roles. Directed by Imtiaz Ali and produced by Birla Studios, Applause Entertainment and Window Seat Films, the film is mounted as an epic romantic drama. Its premise follows a man trying to reconnect with the love he lost during Partition, while his grandson becomes part of that deeply emotional search many years later.
The film is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12, 2026. That makes it an upcoming theatrical release as of May 2026, with the trailer now serving as the audience’s first look at Ali’s latest big-screen romance after Amar Singh Chamkila premiered on Netflix in 2024.
For viewers who love Imtiaz Ali’s brand of wounded romance, the trailer offers exactly that. For others, Main Vaapas Aaunga may feel too close to a style and emotional pattern the filmmaker has already explored many times before.
