The project stands out not just for its formidable creative team, but for its focus on a little-discussed 21-day chapter from Gandhi’s life during the period of India’s independence.
Produced by Anubhav Sinha and Narendra Hirawat under Benaras Media Works and presented by NH Studioz, the film brings together two filmmakers with sharply distinct but equally political storytelling instincts. Sinha has spent the past several years building a strong body of socially charged cinema with Mulk, Article 15, and Thappad, while Mishra’s filmography continues to carry the weight of modern classics such as Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Dharavi, and Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin.

Speaking about the idea behind the film, Sudhir Mishra said, “This new film focuses on an important yet lesser-known chapter of history, the 21 days in the life of Mahatma Gandhi during India’s independence. At a time when the nation was stepping into freedom, and Delhi was becoming the center of power, Gandhi made an unexpected choice: he chose to walk away. But by walking away, he did not retreat. He reinvented himself. While history books record the surface events of that era, this story explores what lay beneath that famous choice and will depict the personal journey of a leader redefining his path.”
The collaboration first drew attention earlier in 2026, when Mishra confirmed Bajpayee’s casting and outlined the film’s historical lens. With Anubhav Sinha producing and NH Studioz presenting, the project now carries the kind of backing that positions it as one of the more ambitious Hindi features currently in development.
