Manoj Muntashir Apologises For Adipurush, Admits Defending The Film Was An Even Bigger Mistake

More than three years after Adipurush became one of Hindi cinema’s most fiercely debated releases, writer Manoj Muntashir has offered his clearest apology yet. The man who once stood firmly by the film has now publicly admitted that both the writing and his own initial reaction to the outrage left him deeply ashamed.

His latest remarks carry weight because Muntashir was not a peripheral voice in the controversy. As the film’s dialogue writer, he became a central figure in the public conversation when objections over the language and tonal choices around revered characters snowballed into a full scale backlash.

Manoj Muntashir Reverses Course And Seeks Forgiveness

Speaking to Times Now, Manoj Muntashir said, “In the beginning, I was a bit dismissive. It took me two days to understand. Adipurush was the biggest mistake of my life, and defending that film was an even bigger mistake. Whatever happened around the film, I’m very ashamed of it, and I beg the forgiveness of this country for all that happened.”

The statement is striking not only for its bluntness, but also for the distance it creates from his earlier defence of the film. Rather than softening his stance, Muntashir framed the episode as a personal and professional low point, signalling a complete reversal from the combative mood that had defined the film’s immediate post release phase.

Why Adipurush Became Such A Flashpoint

Directed by Om Raut, Adipurush arrived in 2023 as a mythological action drama mounted on a massive scale. The film drew intense scrutiny almost instantly, with much of the criticism focused on its dialogues and the way key characters rooted in the Ramayana tradition were presented on screen. That debate quickly moved beyond ordinary film criticism and turned into a larger cultural flashpoint.

For Muntashir, that meant the objections were never confined to box office chatter or social media noise. The response touched faith, sentiment and expectations around how sacred material should be interpreted for mainstream cinema. His latest apology acknowledges that the issue was far bigger than a routine creative disagreement and that the film failed to meet that responsibility.

Manoj Muntashir’S Recent And Upcoming Work

Even with Adipurush continuing to shadow his public image, Muntashir has remained active across mainstream Hindi cinema as a lyricist and writer. His recent credits on IMDb include titles such as Mission Majnu, Animal, Main Atal Hoon, Maidaan, Sarfira, Indian 2, Devara: Part 1 and Sikandar Ka Muqaddar, reflecting how steadily he has continued working across big star vehicles and high visibility projects.

That makes this apology especially notable in the arc of his career. Muntashir is still a significant creative presence in commercial cinema, but Adipurush clearly remains the project he now views as a defining misstep, not just because of what was written, but because of how long it took him to fully absorb the scale of the public hurt it caused.
