Shekhar Kapur Says He Would Give His Right Arm To Direct Matt Damon After 24-Year Missed Chance

Shekhar Kapur and Matt Damon have turned a decades-old missed opportunity into one of the most intriguing Hollywood talking points of the moment. Just hours after Damon publicly revisited the film they never got to make together, Kapur answered with striking candour, deep admiration, and a response that instantly gave the exchange fresh momentum.

Their names have been linked ever since Kapur had wanted Damon for The Four Feathers, a collaboration that did not materialise when Damon moved ahead with The Bourne Identity. That unfinished chapter has now returned to the conversation in a much more direct way, with both men openly acknowledging they still want to work together.

Shekhar Kapur’S Response To Matt Damon

After Damon’s remarks in Mumbai, Kapur made his admiration for the actor unmistakably clear. “I don’t think there is a filmmaker in the world who wouldn’t give their right arm to work with an actor who has as much emotional depth as Matt Damon,” he said. Kapur then added, “Who can ever forget his famous scene with Robin Williams, ‘It’s not your fault,’ in Good Will Hunting. I must have watched it over a 1000 times and been moved to tears each time.”

He then gave the moment a reflective turn. “Events move between the past, present and the future… while time is created in our imagination. So, it’s time Matt and I finally collaborate,” said Shekhar Kapur.

The quote landed with particular force because Damon had only just spoken about the regret he has carried since missing out on Kapur’s film in the early 2000s.

Matt Damon Revisits The Four Feathers Regret

At the India press conference for The Odyssey in Mumbai, Damon said, “I remember that when we were starting out, everyone wanted to collaborate with Shekhar Kapur. I remember when I couldn’t do The Four Feathers for some reason, I was really upset about that.” He continued, “I think I was signed up for a Bourne movie. So, I guess, he has always been on my list and I would like to have another go. That’s like a 20-year-old little debt I’ve been carrying around in my pocket.”

Those comments transformed an old what-if into a current industry conversation. Damon did not speak about the missed project as a passing memory. He framed it as unfinished business, and Kapur answered with the same sense of intent.

Matt Damon’S Recent And Upcoming Work

Damon’s current slate underlines why the renewed interest in a Kapur collaboration stands out. He was seen in Drive-Away Dolls, IF, and The Instigators in 2024, with The Instigators debuting on Apple TV+. He is now part of The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic, which had its London premiere on July 6, 2026 and is scheduled for theatrical release on July 17, 2026. The film features Damon alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.

Placed against that backdrop, Damon’s public push to finally work with Kapur feels especially notable. This was not an offhand compliment or a nostalgic anecdote. It was a clear acknowledgment of a creative partnership both men still want, with Kapur’s response making that interest impossible to miss.
