More Than 90% Of Malayalam Films Released In 2022 Flopped, Suffered Combined Loss Of Rs 325 Crore: Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA)

Out of the 176 Malayalam movies that were released last year, only 17 clicked at the box-office while more than 90% of the films flopped.

Malayalam cinema is known for making niche films with strong artistic sensibilities. However, 2022 was not a great year for it as most of the films released in this year have flopped. While the popularity of Malayalam cinema has increased on OTT platforms, it fails to win the patronage of their native audience.

According to the Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) report, the Malayalam film industry is expected to have suffered an average loss of over ₹300 crore in 2022.

Out of the 176 Malayalam movies that were released last year, only 17 clicked at the box-office while more than 90% of the films flopped. This has caused a combined loss of Rs 325 crore for the filmmakers. Meanwhile, the number of films which were earning above ₹10 crore share for the producers earlier, was less than 10 in 2022. However, a film has to make a minimum of Rs 30 crore from the box office to make a profit for its producer to the tune of Rs 10 crore.

Reacting to it, the President of KFPA M. Renjith said, “The year 2022 did not offer much for the industry in the overall analysis as the number of flops was far bigger than the successful movies. As the content remained the king, there has been a perceptible change in the choices of the audience.”

He said that most of the audience chose to watch the content on OTT and don’t prefer to go to theaters. That’s the reason, some of the producers, whose films failed at the theaters, were able to manage the loss by fetching a reasonable price for its OTT release.

He further added, “Malayalam film industry will have to think differently to bring the audiences into the theaters. We cannot further afford a revenue model that merely depended on the sale of digital rights as theater collections continue to remain the key in the survival of producers.”
