Mrunal Thakur Says Son of Sardaar 2 Shook Her Trust After Chunky Panday Was Cast As Her Husband And Key Roshni Walia Scenes Were Cut

For Mrunal Thakur, the real jolt of Son of Sardaar 2 did not come from a dramatic scene on screen, but from discovering how differently her role had finally taken shape. The actress has now revealed that she had no idea Chunky Panday would play her husband in the film, and that the eventual edit also removed pivotal scenes with Roshni Walia. Taken together, those changes left her feeling that the character she had invested in was not the one audiences fully got to see.

Recalling the experience in an interview with Prema, Mrunal said the casting choice altered her understanding of the part in a way she had not anticipated. “I didn’t know, like, a very senior actor is going to play my husband. Because that just changes my… this is not what I expected from the movie. So, there I failed because there was a little bit of trust that was shaken. But you know what, I don’t have regrets.” In Son of Sardaar 2, she played Rabia Akhtar, while Chunky Panday appeared as her estranged husband Danish.

What Mrunal Thakur Said About The Cut Scenes

If the surprise casting unsettled her, the deleted scenes clearly hurt more. Mrunal said two important moments that anchored Rabia’s emotional world were cut from the final film, including a key exchange with Roshni Walia’s character Saba.

She shared, “I did not know two important scenes of mine would be edited on the table. Like, there’s this beautiful scene with me and Roshni. She’s actually my sister’s child, and my sister dies in the movie, it’s just a narrative. And I give up my personal life for her betterment. She says, ‘It’s better I don’t have a mother, I have you. And I pray that every girl gets a mother like you, even if you’ve not given birth to me.’ But the way you’ve taken care… that narrative was missing.”

That absence weakened Rabia’s emotional arc and stripped away the tenderness that explained her choices. It also changed the weight of her relationship with Saba, making a deeply personal thread feel far less complete in the finished film. Even so, this moment of disappointment arrives at a time when Mrunal’s standing in the industry remains firmly intact.

Mrunal Thakur’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Over the last few years, Mrunal has steadily built a career that moves comfortably between mainstream Hindi films and Telugu dramas with strong emotional stakes. In 2023, she was seen in Pippa and Hi Nanna. While Pippa arrived on Prime Video, Hi Nanna, opposite Nani, further cemented her appeal in warm, emotionally layered stories and drew strong appreciation for her performance.

That balance between reach and range continued in 2024 with The Family Star, in which she starred opposite Vijay Deverakonda. She starrer in last week’s release Dacoit with Adivi Sesh, a theatrical project that keeps her presence active in the Telugu space. She is also part of David Dhawan’s Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, alongside Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, Mouni Roy, Chunky Panday and Jimmy Shergill. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on May 22, 2026, ensuring that even as Son of Sardaar 2 sparks conversation for the wrong reasons, Mrunal’s career momentum continues in full view.
