Janhvi Kapoor recently revealed that her upcoming sports drama Mr & Mrs Mahi pays homage to cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose words from a press event inspired the film.
Directed by Sharan Sharma of Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl fame, the movie stars Kapoor and Rajkumar Rao as the titular couple—Mahendra, a former cricketer, and Mahima, a doctor.

Reflecting on Dhoni’s philosophy, Kapoor expressed her desire to honour it through the film, citing his emphasis on the process rather than the outcome. Speaking at the launch event of the film’s song “Dekhha Tenu,” Kapoor underscored Dhoni’s influence on the storyline.
Rajkumar Rao, reuniting with Kapoor after they collaborated in the 2021 horror comedy Roohi, praised Dhoni’s sportsmanship and humility, expressing admiration for his conduct. He expressed the team’s eagerness to present the film to Dhoni and his wife, Sakshi, as a mark of respect.
Janhvi Sustained Serious Injuries During The Film’s Shoot
Kapoor shared the challenges she encountered while preparing for her role, including sustaining injuries during cricket training.
Despite setbacks such as dislocated shoulders, Kapoor credited director Sharan Sharma and coaches Abhishek Nayar and Vikrant for their unwavering support and dedication to her training. Sharma commended Kapoor’s commitment and lauded her performance in the sports drama.
Janhvi said, “A lot of hard work has gone into it. I trained for almost two years. I started training while promoting Mili. Our director is a purist and works with a lot of honesty, so he wanted me to become a cricketer for the film. He didn’t want to use VFX or do anything halfheartedly.”
She added, “I suffered a lot of injuries as well while prepping, both my shoulders were dislocated, but I’d like to give all the credit to him, the director, and both my coaches Abhishek Nayar and Vikrant sir who have done a lot of hard work and held my hand at every turn.”
She has also revealed observing Dinesh Karthik during the Baroda training camp for her own training.

Sharma also praised Rajkumar Rao’s contribution to the project, describing him as a “lethal actor” with the passion of a newcomer and the skills of a seasoned performer. Mr & Mrs Mahi promises to showcase Kapoor’s evolution as a cricketer and deliver a compelling narrative inspired by Dhoni’s principles.
With the release date drawing closer, fans eagerly anticipate the on-screen chemistry between Kapoor and Rao in this sports drama. The film will hit theatres on May 31.
