‘One Teaser And You Say It’s A Political Film?’: Pankaj Kapur Slams Those Who Called Bheed An Anti-India Movie

He suggested that instead of being impatient and opinionated, people should watch the film first before making judgments.

Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur has spoken out against the criticism faced by his upcoming film Bheed, directed by Anubhav Sinha. The film chronicles the struggles of migrant workers during the COVID-19-induced lockdown in 2020 and draws parallels with the horrors of partition in India. However, some critics on social media have accused the film of being “anti-India” and attempting to sensationalize the crisis with reminders of the traumatic partition.

Kapur expressed his confusion about why people were jumping to conclusions before even watching the film, saying that society often announces monsoons before a drop of rain happens. He suggested that instead of being impatient and opinionated, people should watch the film first before making judgments.

“It’s ridiculous that one small teaser… And you start saying it’s a political film. It’s an analytical film that talks about the mindset of our society, how we think, how we reflect to a given situation! Very few films have shown authorities in a positive sense, the way this film has shown,” he said.

In the film, Kapur plays a watchman who is displaced overnight after the lockdown is announced. One scene from the trailer shows his character refusing food from Muslim men, accusing them of spreading “Corona Jihad.” Kapur defended the scene, saying that it has been dealt with differently in the film and that viewers would see that human beings are all the same at the end of the day.

“Once you see the film, you’ll realise it has been dealt with differently. He (Sinha) has used this now as a thought that did exist, but there’s also another thought that’s been incorporated in the film. Which when you’ll see will make you realise that human beings, at the end of the day, are all the same,” he added.
