SonyLIV has made an exciting announcement for film enthusiasts as the highly successful and record-breaking Malayalam film, 2018, will soon be available for streaming on their platform from June 7. Despite the movie’s ongoing success in theaters, the streaming giant has decided to provide an opportunity for those who missed the chance to watch it on the big screen. While this news brings joy to many who eagerly await its online release, some ardent fans of 2018 express a hint of disappointment towards the decision to release it on an OTT platform rather than exclusively in cinemas.
Fans Express Disappointment About OTT Release Of 2018
A user wrote, “Very disappointed, it’s too soon and should’ve been postponed…I had a big wish that the movie could’ve got a final maximum gross of 100 crore, from Kerala. At this rate, the maximum gross will be 90 crores.”
Another person expressed their confusion, questioning the haste in releasing the film on SonyLIV. They pointed out that the movie is still performing well at the box office and has recently been released in other languages. They believe that it would have been better to allow some time for the film to gain momentum through positive word-of-mouth and other means. However, with the OTT release, they feel that the audience’s focus will now shift towards waiting for the film to become available on the streaming platform, potentially affecting its theatrical performance.
This movie, directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, tells the story of the destructive Kerala floods in 2018. It has become the most successful film ever made in Malayalam cinema, earning over Rs 160 crore worldwide. The film portrays the loss of lives and extensive damage to properties caused by the floods.

He expressed that the movie, titled 2018: Everyone is a Hero, pays tribute to the collective experience of the people of Kerala during the devastating floods. Bringing this story to the screen and witnessing the overwhelming love it has received has been incredibly fulfilling for him. The film aims to honor the bravery and resilience displayed by every individual during the calamity. Now, with the film becoming available for streaming on SonyLIV, more and more people will have the opportunity to witness our story and witness the extraordinary human spirit that played a vital role in the state’s triumph.
The cast of the film includes Tovino Thomas, Kunchako Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali, Kalaiyarasan, Indrans, Sudheesh, Aju Varghese, Thanvi Ram, and Gauthami Nair.
