Just as Patriot entered the final stretch before its May 1, 2026 theatrical release, the film was hit by a censor hurdle that forced the makers back into the edit room. The Malayalam spy thriller, led by Mohanlal and Mammootty, is undergoing last-minute revisions after the Central Board of Film Certification objected to the name of its villain.
That objection has now become the defining late-stage development around one of Malayalam cinema’s most anticipated multi-starrers of the year. The film had already moved from its earlier April 23 release date, and the fresh round of changes has placed added urgency on the team as it pushes to lock the final version.
Cbfc Objection Forces Last Minute Changes
The board flagged the antagonist’s name because of its similarity to the name of a politician’s son, leading the makers to alter it before certification. The revised cut also includes the removal of certain scenes and changes to a few additional names and references. Work on the updated version is underway at Lal Media Studio in Kochi as the team moves toward resubmission.
Those changes arrive at a crucial moment for a film mounted on unusually large scale for the Malayalam industry. Written, directed and co-edited by Mahesh Narayanan, Patriot features an ensemble that includes Mohanlal, Mammootty, Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara and Revathy. Produced by Anto Joseph and K. G. Anil Kumar, the thriller unfolds in the world of covert operations and surveillance, with national security at the heart of its conflict. Sushin Shyam has composed the music.

For Mohanlal, Patriot lands in the middle of a packed run that has kept him firmly at the centre of big-ticket conversations. After Patriot, his confirmed 2026 theatrical slate also includes Kalamkaval.
