Premalu 2 Dropped After A Year Of Work, Girish Ad Calls It A Huge Setback

The road after Premalu was supposed to lead to an even bigger reunion for Girish AD, Naslen, and Mamitha Baiju. Instead, the sequel never made it to the floor. Speaking at the success event of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, Girish AD confirmed that Premalu 2 was abandoned after nearly a year of work, calling the lost time one of the biggest disappointments in the process.

Girish Ad Opens Up On Premalu 2 Being Dropped

Girish AD’s remark refers to the period after the first film’s breakout success, when development on Premalu 2 became his main focus before the project was eventually halted. The filmmaker said, “Work on this film began after a year. Until then, I had been working on Premalu 2. We had to abandon the project unexpectedly, and it was a huge setback for us. We lost an entire year because of it. There was no need for us to lose that much time.”

The sequel carried obvious weight because Premalu was not just a critical winner but one of Malayalam cinema’s biggest commercial stories of 2024. Released on February 9, 2024, the romantic comedy grew into a major theatrical success, grossing about Rs 136 crore worldwide and ranking among the year’s top Malayalam hits. With that kind of audience recall, a follow-up featuring Naslen and Mamitha Baiju had both box office promise and strong fan interest.

Girish also said the sequel had once been lined up for a Vishu release. Once that plan fell away, the team pivoted to Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, allowing the filmmaker to move ahead with a fresh project rather than remain stuck in a stalled sequel cycle.

Why Premalu Became A Cultural And Box Office Winner

Directed by Girish AD and written with Kiran Josey, Premalu turned a youthful, everyday love story into a genuine phenomenon. Backed by Bhavana Studios along with Fahadh Faasil and Friends and Working Class Hero, the film clicked across Kerala and beyond, pushing Naslen and Mamitha into a far bigger spotlight.

Its success was reflected not only in its theatrical run but also in the way the pairing entered pop culture conversations. What began as a modestly scaled romantic comedy ended up standing among the highest-grossing Malayalam films, proving that a character-driven entertainer could become a mass favourite without losing its charm.

Naslen And Mamitha Move Ahead After The Shelved Sequel

For Naslen, the momentum from Premalu did not slow down even after Premalu 2 was dropped. He followed the 2024 hit with I Am Kathalan, and then continued building his post-Premalu run with Alappuzha Gymkhana and Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra. He also has Mollywood Times in 2026, showing that the actor who broke out as Sachin has quickly turned into one of Malayalam cinema’s most closely watched young leads.

Mamitha Baiju’s trajectory tells a similar story. After Premalu became her defining breakthrough, she expanded into Tamil with Rebel and kept her momentum going through a busy and increasingly high-profile run that includes Dude, Kara, Jana Nayagan, Vishwanath & Sons, and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit. The sequel may have fallen away, but its two stars have moved into an even bigger phase of their careers, which only underlines how significant a Premalu reunion could have been.
