India’s IMAX schedule has delivered a clear upset this week, and Project Hail Mary is at the center of it. What began as a limited premium-format presence has turned into a full-scale takeover, with the Ryan Gosling-led film surging to 108 shows a day in its second week while Dhurandhar The Revenge has slipped to just 21.
The latest allocation gives Project Hail Mary 108 daily shows across 34 IMAX screens in India from April 3. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has secured 66 shows a day, while Dhurandhar The Revenge now trails well behind. The shift is especially striking because Project Hail Mary had opened with far less premium showcasing before audience demand pushed it into a far stronger position.
Project Hail Mary Takes Command Of India’s IMAX Screen War
Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that the revised programming now places Project Hail Mary firmly ahead in the premium-format race. The film has not only expanded in week two, it has overtaken its rivals by a substantial margin, giving Sony a dominant share of IMAX playtime across key Indian markets.
The reshuffle is visible across major cities. In several Mumbai locations, Dhurandhar The Revenge has been pushed to late-night slots, with some shows beginning only after 11:30 pm. Similar patterns have emerged in Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata and Coimbatore. Several IMAX properties have also dropped the film entirely from April 3, while Project Hail Mary continues to command unusually aggressive showtimes, including 3:00 am, 6:00 am and 7:00 am slots in select centres.
Those timings are rare, and they point to one conclusion: exhibitors are seeing enough demand for Project Hail Mary to keep adding premium playtime at every possible hour.
Why Project Hail Mary Is Pulling Ahead In The Premium Format Battle
That market shift also reflects the kind of films competing for IMAX attention. Project Hail Mary is a science fiction drama backed by Sony Pictures and led by Ryan Gosling. Adapted from Andy Weir’s novel, it follows a lone astronaut on a mission tied to Earth’s survival, a premise built around scale, spectacle and immersive viewing. Those qualities make IMAX a natural fit for its theatrical run.
By comparison, Dhurandhar The Revenge is a Hindi action film from Jio Studios starring Ranveer Singh, while The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated tentpole from Universal Pictures. All three titles are chasing the same premium audience, but the latest show split suggests Project Hail Mary has connected most strongly with viewers seeking a large-format experience.
With 108 daily shows now in place, the film has moved far beyond being an underdog in the IMAX race. It is now setting the pace, and the latest programming makes that impossible to miss.
