Honey Trehan’s much-anticipated directorial venture, Punjab ’95, finds itself embroiled in controversy as it navigates hurdles from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, which delves into the harrowing story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, is currently in limbo despite its completion and readiness for release.
Starring Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, Punjab ’95 sheds light on Khalra’s fearless pursuit of justice during the turbulent years of the Punjab insurgency from 1984 to 1994. The CBFC recently scrutinised the film and demanded a staggering 85 cuts, citing concerns over its sensitive subject matter. They are hesitant to grant it a release certificate.
No Clarity On The Release Of Punjab ’95
According to insiders cited in a detailed report by Mid-day, the filmmakers reluctantly agreed to the extensive edits. However, the CBFC remains cautious about granting the film a release certificate, expressing reservations about its portrayal of politically charged events in today’s time.
Makers Also Changed The Title Initially
This isn’t the first setback for Punjab ’95, previously titled Ghallughara. In late 2022, the film underwent a protracted six-month certification process, during which the CBFC demanded 21 cuts and even insisted on a title change.
The production, backed by Ronnie Screwvala’s banner and MacGuffin Pictures, faced legal challenges that led to its withdrawal from prestigious international platforms, including the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
Despite the mounting challenges and increased censorship demands, the cast and crew remain steadfast in their commitment to bringing Khalra’s poignant story to the screen. “The movie might be heavily edited, but the team is determined to get it out there,” a cast member affirmed. “Right now, we’re fighting for its very existence.”
However, sources close to the production reveal a disheartening reality. Due to its exploration of Khalra’s investigations and subsequent disappearance, the film has faced discouragement from releasing parties. Concerns over potential backlash and portrayal of sensitive police procedures have further complicated Punjab ’95‘s journey to cinemas.
