A dramatic turn of events, leading cinema exhibition chain PVR-Inox has filed a lawsuit against Maddock Films, seeking Rs. 60 crore in damages over the last-minute cancellation of the theatrical release of Bhool Chuk Maaf. The film, which was scheduled to hit cinemas on 9th May, was abruptly pulled out just a day prior, sending shockwaves across the exhibition industry.
According to PVR-Inox, the sudden withdrawal has caused massive operational and financial losses. In its legal filing, the company alleged that Maddock Films’ decision was made solely based on the film’s “poor advance booking trends” — a move it claims breached prior agreements and disrupted nationwide programming, promotions, and manpower deployment.
“This is not just about one film being cancelled. This is about the larger damage to the business ecosystem,” said a senior executive from the exhibitor chain, on condition of anonymity. “Marketing spends, logistics, and operations had been locked — pulling the film a day before release is not just unprofessional, it’s unsustainable.”
However, Maddock Films has refuted the allegation, stating that the cancellation was prompted by the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the sensitive nationwide sentiment that followed. In a brief statement, the studio said, “Out of deep respect for the lives lost and the ongoing national mood, we took a responsible call to delay the release of Bhool Chuk Maaf. We believe this is not the moment to celebrate or promote entertainment when the country is mourning.”
The legal face-off raises important questions about commercial commitments versus social responsibility. While exhibitors argue for contractual discipline and business continuity, studios — particularly in emotionally volatile times — often take calls based on public sentiment and optics.
As of now, no new release date for Bhool Chuk Maaf has been announced. Meanwhile, industry insiders are closely watching the unfolding legal battle, which could set a precedent for future studio-exhibitor dynamics.
Maddock Films Agrees To Pay As Per Court
As per latest development, today morning court has issued the order for compensation and as per sources, Maddock has agreed to pay for the same whatever order comes on Monday. Now other cinema chains will also follow the suit and will ask for their share of compensation depending on final call on Monday.
