Rajpal Yadav Says A Bollywood Misunderstanding Cost Him Om Shanti Om Role Opposite Shah Rukh Khan

Imagine learning years later that a Shah Rukh Khan film had a part meant for you, only for it to vanish because someone else said you were not interested. That is the strange Bollywood twist Rajpal Yadav has now opened up about, revealing that a misunderstanding cost him a role in Om Shanti Om even though Shah Rukh reportedly wanted him on board.

Rajpal said the truth only surfaced later, during the making of Billu, when he realised the part had slipped away without his knowledge. What followed was not an ugly confrontation but a candid exchange that cleared up a confusion both actors had apparently been kept out of.

The Billu Set Meeting That Cleared The Air

Rajpal said he was told on the Billu set that Shah Rukh wanted to meet him because a role in Om Shanti Om had originally been written for him. He recalled being informed, “Voh role likhwaya tha unhone aapke liye aur voh aapne mana kardiya keh ke time nahi hai.”

That came as news to him. Rajpal said that when he checked with his manager, neither of them had any idea such a refusal had ever been communicated. He then laid out what he believes happened behind the scenes: “Pata laga ki vahan pe kisi ne bitching karke aur Om Shanti Om ke liye meri tasveer dusri pesh kardi. Pata bhi nahi SRK ko aur mujhe bhi pata nahi.”

The actor added that when he and Shah Rukh finally spoke, the moment was warm rather than tense. They met, hugged, and moved past it. The story now lands less as a grievance and more as a reminder of how easily careers and casting choices can be reshaped by people operating in the middle.

Directed by Farah Khan and produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, Om Shanti Om released in 2007 and became one of the defining Hindi films of its time. With Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade and Kirron Kher in its ensemble, the film built the kind of pop culture legacy that still makes every casting what if around it instantly compelling.

Why The Missed Casting Still Fascinates

Part of the reason this story lingers is Rajpal Yadav’s own staying power. He never became a one phase comic actor who disappeared with changing trends. Instead, he has remained a familiar and flexible screen presence across big ticket entertainers and streaming titles, showing up in films like Chandu Champion, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Baby John after earlier appearances in projects such as Kathal and Apurva. That consistency gives fresh weight to his Om Shanti Om memory, because it is easy to see why a filmmaker or star would have wanted his distinct energy in a high profile ensemble.

His next confirmed theatrical release is Bhooth Bangla, which arrives in cinemas on April 17, 2026. Directed by Priyadarshan, the horror comedy stars Akshay Kumar, Tabu, Paresh Rawal, Wamiqa Gabbi and Rajpal Yadav. Even now, Rajpal remains one of those actors who can change the flavour of a scene the moment he walks into it, which is exactly why this lost Shah Rukh collaboration still feels like such an irresistible Bollywood what if.
