Akshay Kumar and Anees Bazmee are returning to a space they understand better than most, star-led commercial entertainment, and their new collaboration now has a confirmed title. Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that Bazmee’s film with Kumar and Vidya Balan is titled Ram Aur Shyam, with the second schedule set to begin in Karjat later this month after the project went on floors in Mumbai on January 20.
The title gives the film an old-school Hindi cinema flavour, while the pairing behind it adds immediate interest. Kumar and Balan have shared one of the most familiar on-screen combinations in mainstream Hindi cinema, and Bazmee’s reunion with Kumar revives a director-actor collaboration that previously produced Welcome and Singh Is Kinng in 2008.
Why Ram Aur Shyam Already Feels Like A Comic Event
Bazmee has left little doubt about the tone of the film. Speaking about reuniting with Kumar, he said, “We have a lot of love for each other. We didn’t work for so many years. However, we continued bumping into each other and our bond remained intact. When I got the story of this film and realized it would be apt for Akshay ji, I approached him. He loved the story. He’s very excited about it.” The filmmaker also confirmed the principal cast, saying, “The film stars Akshay ji, Vidya ji, Raashii Khanna, Vijay Raaz, Zakir Hussain, Sayaji Shinde and others. Expect a lot of comedy, romance, action, songs, etc.”
That ensemble places Ram Aur Shyam firmly in Bazmee’s comfort zone, a broad entertainer powered by personalities, humour and heightened situations. The film is produced by Dil Raju and remains in production, with Kumar, Balan, Raashii Khanna and Vijay Raaz leading the cast. Based on Bazmee’s own description, it blends comedy, romance, action and songs into a mainstream theatrical format.
Bazmee also addressed the discussion around Sankranthiki Vasthunam, another Dil Raju-backed film, and acknowledged the similarity in setup. He said, “The story of our film is close to the premise of (Sankranthiki Vasthunam). Also, Dil Raju bhai is the producer of both the films. All I can say is that hamari film acchi hai. Mehnat poori ki hai humne.”

Kumar’s recent theatrical phase has been defined by persistent movement across large-format commercial cinema, from action to franchise storytelling and broad audience entertainers. His next release is Bhooth Bangla slated to release in mid April.
That makes Ram Aur Shyam a notable addition to his current slate, because it brings him back to a filmmaker who helped shape some of his most fondly remembered comic hits. With the Mumbai schedule underway and the Karjat leg next, the film now carries both production momentum and the nostalgic pull of a title designed for a full-scale Hindi entertainer.
