Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya re-release on January 17 has brought the filmmaker to reflect deeply on his journey. Watching the iconic film again after 27 years moved him emotionally and led to a candid confession about how the success of Satya eventually contributed to his downfall.
Ram Gopal Varma Cried After Watching Satya Again In Theatres
Varma shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), expressing how watching the film for the first time in nearly three decades brought tears to his eyes. He said, “While watching Satya, tears started rolling down my cheeks, and I didn’t care if anyone saw me. The tears weren’t just for the film, but for everything that happened after.”
In his post, he compared the experience of making a film to giving birth, saying creators often don’t fully appreciate their work while they’re making it. Varma admitted he didn’t realise the full impact of Satya at the time. “I didn’t recognise how many inspirations Satya created. I just saw it as another step in my journey,” he explained.
Filmmaker Gets Real About His ‘Drunk On Success’ Phase
After the success of Satya and later hits like Rangeela, Varma gained massive recognition. But looking back, he confessed that he became consumed by his success. “I didn’t get drunk on alcohol but on my own success and arrogance. I only realised this after watching Satya again,” he wrote. This shift in his mindset led him to make films driven more by shock value and gimmicks than meaningful storytelling.
Varma also reflected on the missed opportunity to use Satya as a benchmark for his future work. “After Satya’s screening, I sat in the dark, wondering why I didn’t set this film as a standard for what I should do next. I realised I betrayed the trust of those who believed in me,” he shared.
Ram Gopal Varma Shares Advise To Fellow Directors
The filmmaker used his experience as advice for others in the industry. He urged fellow directors to avoid self-indulgence and always measure their work against their best creation. “I wish I had one rule: before making any film, I should watch Satya again. I’m sure I wouldn’t have made 90% of the films I’ve made since then,” he admitted.
Concluding his reflection, Varma made a promise to focus on sincerity moving forward. “I want to spend whatever time I have left creating something as worthy as Satya. This is my truth, and I swear it on Satya.”
