Ram Gopal Varma may be circling one of Mumbai’s most controversial real life stories again, and this time the conversation is centered on encounter specialist Daya Nayak. The filmmaker, long associated with gritty crime worlds and morally complex policing narratives, is now in early discussions to direct a biographical film on Nayak, with development work currently focused on the screenplay and the film’s larger storytelling lens.
The renewed movement around the project has instantly sparked interest because it places Varma back in a zone that has historically produced some of his most talked about work. It also opens up the possibility of a fresh re-examination of Mumbai’s policing and underworld ecosystem through a figure who has remained deeply discussed for years.
Script Development Underway
The proposed film is still at the development stage, but the writing process is clearly where the momentum lies right now. A source familiar with the development said, “The idea has been around for a while, but in recent months there has been renewed movement on it. Right now, the priority is getting the screenplay right and deciding the lens through which Daya Nayak’s story should be told.”
That line is key to where the project stands. The internal discussions are not just about mounting a standard biopic, but about figuring out how Nayak’s journey should be framed on screen. Another major point in the background is that a large studio is expected to back the film, giving the project a potentially bigger platform if it moves ahead.
Company Universe Connection Back In Focus
One of the most intriguing elements in the current round of discussions is the possible link to Company, Varma’s 2002 Hindi crime drama directed by him and written by Jaideep Sahni. The film starred Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi, Mohanlal, Manisha Koirala, Antara Mali and Seema Biswas, and followed a gangster lieutenant whose alliance with his boss fractures under rising distrust and violence.
According to an insider, “In 2010, there were conversations around fitting it organically into the larger world of Company. While nothing has been decided yet, it has come up during discussions.”
That earlier idea was tied to a proposed Company 2, which would have shifted attention from gangsters to encounter specialists. Daya Nayak was also expected to serve as a consultant during those initial conversations. For now, no final call has been taken on whether the new film will stand alone or fold into a larger cinematic universe.

Varma’s recent directorial work includes Konda and Dangerous in 2022, followed by Vyuham in 2024. In the current phase of his career, he appears to be returning once again to crime driven storytelling, the genre most closely tied to his strongest body of work.
As of June 2026, Syndicate and Sarkar 4 are the major confirmed films associated with his immediate slate. The current buzz around the Daya Nayak project adds another intense crime narrative to that mix, and reinforces the sense that Varma is once again building from the territory that shaped his cinematic identity.
