Just ahead of its theatrical launch, Ramayana has scored an important victory off screen. The Bombay High Court has granted interim protection to the makers, restraining unauthorised recording, hosting and streaming of the film after leaked trailer footage raised fresh piracy concerns.
Bombay High Court Grants Dynamic Injunction
The court passed a dynamic ad interim injunction against unidentified John Doe entities and digital platforms, giving the makers room to act swiftly against piracy even when the offenders are not immediately known. The legal action was initiated by Godpower Media Private Limited, which holds the copyright and exploitation rights for the film’s domestic and territorial intellectual property.
The plea sought broad protection over the film’s script, characters, footage, lyrics and sound recordings. The makers told the court that despite confidentiality agreements at exclusive preview screenings, footage from both trailers had already been secretly recorded and circulated online. With the theatrical release imminent, the concern was that similar unauthorised recordings could emerge from cinema halls and spread across websites and social media.
The order carries weight because it goes beyond identified infringers and also covers unknown individuals and platforms that may attempt to illegally circulate Ramayana once it opens in theatres.
Why The Order Matters Ahead Of Release
The legal shield arrives at a particularly sensitive moment for the film, which has been mounted on a massive scale. The court was informed that Part 1 was produced at an outlay of Rs 2,000 crore, while the planned two part saga carries a combined budget of Rs 4,000 crore.
For a film of this scale, even small leaks can quickly become a major online threat. By securing a dynamic injunction before release, the producers have created a faster route to seek takedowns and restrain fresh piracy attempts as they arise. For a tentpole title banking on a huge theatrical turnout, that protection is as crucial as the promotional push in the final days before release.
Cast And Release Plans
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana brings together Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Yash as Ravana. It is produced by Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG and Monster Mind Creations, with Namit Malhotra leading the project.
The film has also cleared certification ahead of release. Ramayana received a U certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification, and its runtime is 3 hours and 15 minutes. The first chapter releases on November 5, 2026, while the second chapter is planned for 2027. With its ensemble, scale and rollout now locked, the court order gives the film a stronger path into theatres.
