Ranbir Kapoor has finally put an end to the chatter around Ramayana with a reveal that instantly raises the stakes for Nitesh Tiwari’s mythological epic. The actor, already fronting the film as Lord Rama, has now confirmed that he will also step into the role of Parshurama, making it a double role that adds a striking new layer to one of the most closely watched Hindi films of 2026.
The confirmation arrived at a moment when Ramayana had already seized public attention. With the teaser now out and the US launch events pushing the film firmly into the spotlight, Kapoor’s own statement has turned a heavily discussed possibility into the project’s first major character reveal.
Ranbir Kapoor Confirms The Double Role
Clearing the air himself, Kapoor said, “Lord Vishnu had different avatars. Lord Rama was an avatar, and Lord Parshurama was an avatar before Lord Rama.”
He also opened up about his process while discussing how he approached the performances. “Just to get the opportunity, you know, how I got to play Lord Rama, to also play Lord Parshurama was fantastic. I think as an actor, apart from body language, I think if you deeply understand the spirituality and the emotionality of the characters, I think everything starts from there. I think that’s what I did the year leading up to the shoot of Ramayana, to understand who these people and characters are, what they stand for and what their motives are.”
That statement gives official shape to what the teaser had already suggested. In the epic, Parshurama’s meeting with Rama comes after Sita’s swayamvar, when he confronts the prince before recognising him as another avatar of Vishnu. The teaser directly connects to that dramatic stretch of the story, with Ravie Dubey seen as Lakshmana and Arun Govil as Dashratha.
How The Mythological Epic Is Taking Shape
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, Ramayana is being mounted as a two-part theatrical saga with one of the most expansive ensembles in recent Hindi cinema. Sai Pallavi plays Sita, Yash takes on the role of Ravana, Sunny Deol features as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey plays Lakshmana. The cast also includes Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Arun Govil, Kunal Kapoor, Adinath Kothare, Sheeba Chaddha and Indira Krishnan.
Part One is scheduled for a theatrical release during Diwali 2026, while Part Two is planned for Diwali 2027. The teaser was unveiled on April 2, 2026, formally kicking off the film’s promotional journey and giving audiences their first strong sense of the world Tiwari and his team are building.
Why Ramayana Marks A New Career Turn
Kapoor’s recent screen choices have swung between glossy romance, fantasy spectacle and bruising masculinity. He appeared in Brahmastra Part One: Shiva in 2022, followed by Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Animal in 2023, a stretch that showed both his commercial range and his willingness to shift tone sharply from one film to the next.
What makes Ramayana especially significant in that trajectory is the kind of image it asks him to inhabit. Playing Rama places him at the emotional centre of a culturally loaded retelling, while Parshurama brings a more confrontational force into the same canvas. Alongside Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s confirmed Love & War with Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, this film now stands as a defining chapter in Kapoor’s next phase on screen.
