Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana Faces Major Runtime Trim In China, New Cut Said To Be 166 Minutes

Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana is heading to China with a sharply shorter cut, giving one of Indian cinema’s grandest mythological spectacles a notably different shape for an overseas audience. The Chinese version has been listed at 166 minutes, making it 33 minutes shorter than the Indian cut.

That is more than a routine international adjustment. For a film drawn from one of India’s most sacred epics, the reduced runtime instantly puts attention on how mythological storytelling and devotional material are being adapted for a market with tightly controlled theatrical regulations. It also makes the China release one of the most intriguing early chapters in Ramayana’s global journey.

Why Ramayana’s China Release Is 33 Minutes Shorter

The film will release in China under the title Ramayana: The Legend of the Prince. The listed runtime there stands at two hours and 46 minutes, setting up a significantly different viewing experience from the Indian version.

The source article cites an insider saying, “China’s Film Industry Promotion Law prohibits content that seeks to undermine the state’s religious policies or promotes heresay or superstition. The country’s censorship system also needs to give its approval before release. Given that ‘Ramayana’ is an adaptation of the ancient Indian epic, it could have a bearing on how devotional elements are presented in the Chinese version.”

That backdrop gives the runtime reduction added weight. In a film of this scale, trimming 33 minutes can reshape pacing, emotional beats, and even the presentation of spiritual themes. And that is what makes this development more than just a technical release detail. It feeds directly into the larger conversation around how Ramayana is being positioned as an international event film.

Inside Ramayana’s Big Global Franchise Push

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana has been mounted as a large-scale mythological franchise backed by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios, in association with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. The confirmed cast includes Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. The project has also been unveiled as a two-part cinematic franchise, with Part 1 scheduled for 2026 and Part 2 for 2027.

Its premise draws from the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, centring on the clash between Rama and Ravana in a live-action retelling designed for worldwide audiences. With a star-led cast and a visual effects-driven scale, the film stands as a major global franchise play for its producers, not just a domestic tentpole.

For Ranbir Kapoor, that gives the China runtime story extra significance. Ramayana is one of the marquee titles in his upcoming slate, and the way it travels internationally will shape how this ambitious franchise lands beyond India. A 33-minute trim in one of the world’s most tightly controlled film markets underlines just how differently the same epic can be packaged for global release.
