Ranbir Kapoor has dropped a major Ramayana reveal, and it changes the way audiences may look at the franchise even before its first chapter arrives. The actor has now confirmed that Ramayana Part 2 is already halfway through production, while promising that the follow-up will be bigger, more crowd-pleasing and even more ambitious in its storytelling sweep.
The mythological franchise is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman. The two-part saga is backed by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in association with Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. The first film is scheduled for a Diwali 2026 theatrical release, with the second chapter planned for Diwali 2027.
Ranbir Kapoor Opens Up About Ramayana’S Scale
Speaking to The Direct, Ranbir explained how difficult it has been to compress an epic of this magnitude into two films. He said, “To be honest, to tell Ramayana, you probably need a 10-part movie, but the kind of conciseness in two parts was very hard.”
He also addressed the question of whether a story as timeless as Ramayana needs to be reshaped for a modern audience. In the same interaction, the actor said, “I don’t think a story like Ramayana needs that. I think the text has stayed for over 4,000 years. Lord Rama has been the conscious gatekeeper of millions of people around the world, and I think everything that it talks about courage, good over evil, righteousness, forgiveness, compassion, ego is a life lesson.”
Ranbir then shared the update that has now become the biggest talking point around the film. He said, “We’re already 50 percent done shooting Part Two even before the first part is released because it’s a continuing story,” before adding that the next installment will be “even larger, more entertaining.”
That production progress also gives sharper context to Sunny Deol’s Lord Hanuman, whose role is expected to expand significantly in the second film. With the sequel already moving ahead, the franchise appears to be building toward the portions of the epic where Hanuman’s presence becomes far more central to the emotional and action-driven momentum of the story.
Ramayana is being mounted as a lavish retelling of the Indian epic, with the first film expected to follow Lord Ram’s exile and the events that drive the conflict with Ravana. The second chapter is positioned to take the narrative into its most intense and defining passages.
Ranbir Kapoor’S Big Screen Momentum
This Ramayana update arrives during a strong theatrical phase for Ranbir Kapoor. In 2023, he headlined Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar opposite Shraddha Kapoor, followed by Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol. Animal emerged as one of the year’s biggest commercial successes and further reinforced his draw in event cinema.
That makes Ramayana one of the most significant films in his current lineup. It also comes ahead of another major theatrical title, Love & War, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2027 film co-starring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. With Ramayana Part 1 lined up for Diwali 2026 and the second chapter arriving in Diwali 2027, Ranbir’s slate reflects a star leaning fully into spectacle-driven stories designed for the big screen.
