Ranbir Kapoor and Yash brought one of Indian cinema’s most anticipated face-offs to San Diego Comic-Con, but it was Ranbir’s candid take on Ravana that gave fans their sharpest insight yet into Ramayana. Speaking at the global event, the actor suggested that Yash’s version of the iconic antagonist will not lean on the familiar visual and tonal template audiences have seen for years.
Praising his co-star’s performance, Ranbir said Yash played Ravana with “so much swag, aura, and honesty he has really made Ravana come alive.” He then added, “Over the years, we have a very stereotypical depiction of Ravana, but not this one.”
Those remarks instantly set the tone for the conversation around the film, especially because Ramayana is positioning its central conflict through two of the industry’s biggest stars, with Ranbir as Lord Rama and Yash as Ravana.
Ranbir Kapoor On Why Yash Fit Ravana
Ranbir also revealed that despite portraying mythology’s most famous adversaries, he and Yash have not yet spent much time performing together on set. “Lord Rama and Ravana will be appearing together at the end of the film, with maybe a meeting in the middle. But we haven’t shot that. So, we haven’t had the opportunity to work together,” Ranbir explained.
Still, his admiration for Yash came through clearly. “I truly believe that we needed somebody with his aura, his stardom, his outlook to play this role,” he underlined.
At the same panel, Ranbir also opened up about the emotional weight of playing Lord Rama. “I remember when the film was first offered to me, there was so much of fear, so much of doubt. ‘Will I be able to do this, am I capable enough?’ But I think that doubt changed into gratitude very early on. I think it was a blessing, an opportunity of a lifetime, and a moral responsibility.”

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana: Part 1 brings together Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi, Sunny Deol and Ravie Dubey in key roles. The film is produced by Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, with Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman attached to the music. The story revisits the revered epic through the journey of Lord Rama and the conflict that builds toward his showdown with Ravana. The first part is scheduled to release theatrically on November 8, 2026.
That scale also makes the film a significant turning point in Ranbir’s current phase as a star, moving from contemporary blockbusters into a role that carries both cultural weight and intense audience scrutiny.
