For three decades, she has been a queen of hearts and a powerhouse of talent, delivering performances that have defined an era. Yet, one of India’s most prestigious honors remained just out of reach. Until now. In a moment that feels both overdue and perfectly timed, Rani Mukerji has won the National Award for Best Actress at the 71st National Film Awards for her breathtaking performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway.
The win is a landmark achievement, not just for the powerful film, but for the actress herself, as this is her first-ever National Award in a storied 30-year career.
A Career-Defining, Emotional Victory
The emotional weight of this milestone was not lost on Mukerji. In a heartfelt statement, she described the win as a deeply personal validation of her life’s work. “I’m overwhelmed to have won the National Award for my performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway. A Win Dedicated To Mothers Everywhere
The film, which tells the harrowing true story of a mother’s fight against a foreign legal system to regain custody of her children, struck a deep chord with the actress. She dedicated the prestigious award to mothers, explaining how her own experience informed her portrayal of Debika Chatterjee. “The story of this Indian immigrant mother who went all out for her child and took on a nation shook me deeply… a mother’s love for her child is unconditional…I realised this when I had my own,” Rani stated. “This win, this film feels deeply emotional and personal. A mother can move mountains for her children.”
An Ode To The Fans
Rani Mukerji also took the opportunity to express her immense gratitude for her supporters who have championed her throughout her journey. She acknowledged their unwavering loyalty as a key motivator. “It also feels the apt time to again thank all my fans, from across the world, who have relentlessly supported me through thick and thin for these 30 years!
