What played out as a starry festival moment has now landed in a courtroom, putting Ranveer Singh at the centre of a controversy that has sharply shifted the spotlight from performance to accountability. His imitation of a key Kantara moment at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India in Goa sparked outrage, and the matter is now headed for another crucial hearing on April 10.
The controversy stemmed from Singh’s remarks while praising filmmaker-actor Rishab Shetty and recreating the Daiva possession sequence associated with Kantara: Chapter 1. During the performance, he referred to the figure as a “female ghost,” a description that sparked strong objections from those who saw it as insensitive to the cultural and spiritual significance of the imagery.
Courtroom Apology Sets Up April 10 Hearing
The latest turn came in court, where the complainant’s counsel argued that Singh’s December 2025 Instagram apology did not qualify as a formal apology before the law. In response, Singh’s legal team said he would submit an affidavit carrying an unconditional apology when the matter is taken up next on April 10, 2026.
The same hearing also brought another notable detail into focus, with Singh expected to visit the Chamundi Temple in Mysuru as part of his effort to address the hurt caused by the remarks. In his earlier Instagram statement, the actor had said his intention was to appreciate Rishab Shetty’s performance and the power of the scene, while expressing regret over hurting sentiments and reiterating his respect for cultural traditions and beliefs.
The legal development adds another layer to what was initially seen as a festival-stage moment, and it has kept Singh unexpectedly in the spotlight for reasons far removed from his film promotions. Yet in the middle of this off-screen turbulence, his film slate remains firmly packed, making the contrast between courtroom proceedings and career momentum even more striking.
From Simmba To Don 3, Singh’s Screen Lineup Stays Busy
Singh was last seen in Singham Again in 2024, returning as Simmba in Rohit Shetty’s cop universe spectacle led by Ajay Devgn. Before that, he headlined Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023 opposite Alia Bhatt, a film that emerged as a major Hindi theatrical success and marked a strong comeback after Cirkus in 2022.
His next confirmed theatrical release is Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, which is slated for 2025. Another major project firmly on his slate is Don 3, directed by Farhan Akhtar, a film that has remained one of the most talked-about titles in his upcoming lineup. Taken together, these projects show Singh staying rooted in big-screen star vehicles even as this legal controversy continues to unfold off screen.
