What began as a film festival compliment has now returned to the courtroom spotlight, with Ranveer Singh’s Kantara-related remark case taking a crucial turn in the Karnataka High Court. On Friday, the actor informed the court that he is willing to rework his apology, prompting the matter to be adjourned to April 23 as the legal dispute over his remarks moved into a fresh phase.
The controversy traces back to Singh’s appearance at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, where he praised Rishab Shetty’s performance in Kantara. During that interaction, Singh referred to Chamundi Devi as a “female ghost” and also mimicked a moment from the film, leading to outrage and a legal complaint.
Ranveer Singh’s Revised Apology Offer Puts Focus On April 23 Hearing
During the hearing before Justice M. Nagaprasanna, Singh’s counsel said the actor was ready to submit a revised affidavit of apology after discussing the wording with the complainant. The court was also told that Singh had expressed regret over the remarks and had undertaken to visit the deity’s temple and offer prayers.
The complainant, Prashanth Methal, pushed back on the apology’s credibility and argued that the affidavit did not reflect genuine remorse. He also told the court that Shetty had previously cautioned Singh against making such remarks, while pressing for a more suitably worded statement. After recording the submissions, Justice Nagaprasanna adjourned the matter to April 23.
How The Kantara Remark Reached Court
The legal fallout escalated after a Bengaluru magistrate directed an investigation under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. An FIR was later registered at High Grounds Police Station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to promoting enmity, insulting religion, and public mischief.
Singh subsequently moved the High Court, arguing that his comments were made in praise of Shetty’s work in Kantara and were never intended to offend religious sentiments or disturb communal harmony. The proceedings have now turned the controversy into a significant legal test of how celebrity speech at public events can trigger criminal scrutiny when religious sentiment is involved.
That makes the current hearing especially notable for Singh, who is navigating both a sensitive court battle and a high-visibility phase in his screen career.
Ranveer Singh’s Recent And Upcoming Work
The legal scrutiny arrives at a moment when Singh’s professional choices are also under active public attention, making the contrast between his courtroom battle and his on-screen momentum especially striking. Ranveer Singh’s last major theatrical release as a lead was Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023, directed by Karan Johar and co-starring Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi. The film performed well and restored momentum after Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Cirkus, both of which were released in 2022.
He was also seen in Singham Again in 2024, reprising his popular Simmba role in Rohit Shetty’s cop universe. He delivered two all time blockbusters Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar The Revenge, that keeps him firmly in the conversation as he navigates a closely watched phase in both his career and public life. His next film will be Pralay.
