The rumour mill had already started assigning literary roots to Ranveer Singh’s Pralay, but Hansal Mehta has now stepped in and shut that line of chatter down completely. The filmmaker has confirmed that the much-talked-about project is not based on any existing book or known property, giving Pralay a far more intriguing identity as an original large-scale genre film at a time when such bets remain rare in Hindi cinema.
The clarification lands at a crucial moment because Pralay has been generating attention not just for its scale, but also for the creative team shaping it behind the scenes. Mehta, speaking about the film in a recent interview, explained that the idea had been in development well before it became a headline-grabbing project. He said, “Jai had been working on this idea for a long time.” He added that the film gathered momentum after Ranveer Singh connected strongly with the material and supported its journey forward.
Hansal Mehta Sets The Record Straight On Pralay
Addressing speculation directly, Mehta said, “It’s not an adaptation.” He further clarified that Jai Mehta and Vishal Kapoor have written the original story. He also explained why certain literary works do not always make for effective screen translations, saying, “I think a book like Blindness is not easily adapted to film. I had seen the 2008 film adaptation and it wasn’t great. Writers like Saramago or Salman Rushdie, I feel they are best experienced on paper. Their books lose all their magic when interpreted for cinema.”
That statement decisively closes the door on theories linking Pralay to previously published material. Mehta also described the film’s setting as a major creative challenge, calling it “a post-apocalyptic world that hasn’t been attempted before at this scale in India.” He stressed that the process has gone far beyond scripting and has involved extensive visualisation, world-building, and preparing the film for a star-led, studio-backed canvas.
He summed up the central challenge by saying, “The victory of Jai’s film will depend on its immersive nature.” Mehta added that the team is collaborating with international talent to make the dystopian world believable while mounting it at a budget significantly lower than a similar Hollywood production.
That blend of originality and scale also makes Pralay feel especially significant for Ranveer Singh, who appears to be choosing a project that could reset the conversation around his next phase as a leading man.
Why Pralay Marks A Bold Turn For Ranveer Singh
For Ranveer Singh, Pralay arrives at an interesting point in his career. His last full-fledged theatrical release as a lead was Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023, directed by Karan Johar and co-starring Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi. The romantic family drama performed strongly and grossed about Rs. 356.61 crore worldwide.
He was also seen in Singham Again in 2024, where he reprised Simmba in Rohit Shetty’s cop universe alongside Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff. With Pralay, Ranveer now seems to be stepping into a darker, more high-concept space, and that alone makes the film one of his most closely watched moves right now.
